Torres was substituted at half-time during the second leg at Old Trafford Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Fernando Torres to be a hit at Chelsea despite failing again during the 2-1 Champions League loss at Manchester United.
The £50m signing has not scored since his move in January and was substituted at half-time as the Blues exited at the last-eight stage, 3-1 on aggregate.
"I didn't see how they could leave him out having signed him for that much money," said United boss Ferguson.
"It's not working at the moment but he's young and there are more seasons."
Ferguson added: "Chelsea had an opportunity to sign Torres and I can't think of a club that would not have wanted the striker. It was a fantastic bit of business."

This is not the first time a Kenyan fan has died because of football matches happening far away in England.

In May 2009, Seuleiman Alphonso Omondi, an ardent Arsenal fan committed suicide after Manchester United eliminated the Gunners from the Champions League.

And last year in March, a Manchester United fan, 19-year old Abubakar Baishe was repeatedly stabbed by a fellow school-mate, who was an Arsenal fan. Baishe was stabbed in the left side of his abdomen after United beat Liverpool on March 21 2010, though survived the tragic incident.

MAD FOR UTD ... Mourinho believes he'll be swapping Madrid for Old Trafford

Jose: I will be next Utd boss

JOSE MOURINHO believes he will succeed Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The Special One wants to take over as Manchester United boss at the end of next season - and reckons he will get the job.
SunSport revealed last month that Real Madrid manager Mourinho, 48, is set on 'coming home' to the Premier League.
He has told close pals he believes the way will be open for him in the summer of 2012.
The problem would come if Fergie decides to go out on a high this year with a second Treble triumph.
Mourinho has three years left on his Real deal but could walk away, such is his desire to return to work in the Prem.
Fergie, 69, said recently: "Jose is a great friend of mine. We've spoken many times about his future and I understand his wish to return to England.
"But it's difficult for me to say when my position will be available. It will be my health that decides."
United chiefs are keen on Mourinho, who won the Champions League with both Porto and Inter Milan and guided Chelsea to two Premier League titles.
The Portuguese coach has led Real into their first Champions League semi-final since 2003, where they will meet bitter rivals Barcelona.
United had earmarked Everton boss David Moyes.
But Mourinho's CV and standing in the game are proving too hard to ignore.
Mourinho was asked yesterday if he might replace Roberto Mancini at Manchester City. He replied: "I say it is impossible."
Mancini said: "Yes, and I think it would be impossible for me to go to Madrid."

Manchester City player to watch: Mario Balotelli. His talent is rarely doubted, his temperament is generally accepted as Fahrenheit 451 grade of hot-headed but City need a player to prove worthy of a big occasion. Balotelli's stay in Manchester has been a one-man column-inch generator, and it would seem he either scores, gets substituted or sent off, and has come close to all three on a couple of occasions. There are suspicions, however, that of City's many recent signings, he is in an exclusive group of players who Roberto Mancini actually wanted at the club. It is now time to repay that faith.

Manchester United player to watch: Dimitar Berbatov. It is one of the oddities of the 2010-11 season that the Premier League's top goalscorer is no longer a first choice for his club. The Rooney revival and the Englishman's comfort with Javier Hernandez as his partner has relegated a player who still looks in form. Decisive strikes against Fulham and Bolton and a 45-minute cameo at West Ham that showed off his finery when possession football was required mean that Ferguson will expect a rather different contribution to the indolence of that aforementioned penalty, and the off-key showing that preceded it.

Key battle: Nemanja Vidic v Edin Dzeko. Vidic is largely acknowledged as the anchor that has kept Manchester United in their quest for glory on all three fronts, and he is a player who is almost ever-present, missing just two league matches all season, and continuing to bury his Fernando Torres hoodoo in the two-parter with Chelsea. Dzeko, meanwhile, may also be thankful for the presence of Torres, since he is sheltered by the Spaniard's status as most expensive flop of the last transfer window. The Bosnian needs this match to announce himself and has previously scored against United for Wolfsburg in the Champions League.

Trivia: Manchester United's father figure, Sir Matt Busby, their manager from 1945 to 1969, played in a losing FA Cup semi, in 1932, a losing final, in 1933, and at long last in 1934, a winning final. For Manchester City.

Stats: Saturday will provide the largest ever attendance for a Manchester derby, as a 90,000 full house is expected. The previous record was 78,000 on September 20, 1947, when both clubs were playing at Maine Road as Old Trafford was being rebuilt after bomb damage sustained during World War Two.

Odds: City are 3.75 at bet365, and United are 2.10. Remember that extra-time is a draw at the bookies so if you think that will happen then
that's on offer at 3.25.

Prediction: With everything riding on this one game, can this be the moment that City put paid to that calculator-style banner that measures City's term without a trophy? They will need to win this, and will do. Only Stoke and Bolton can stop them now.

Fergie: Hernandez sidelined Berbatov

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Javier Hernandez's "startling" impact at Manchester United has ruined Dimitar Berbatov's season.

Berbatov's superior hold up play will likely see him selected in the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney as a lone striker for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester City at Wembley.
But Berbatov has regularly been condemned to the bench despite the flying start he had to the season which has him leading the Premier League's goal charts, with 22-year-old newcomer Hernandez preferred next to Rooney in Ferguson's two-striker system.
Berbatov has continued to perform when selected, such as when Ferguson hinted at Saturday's tactics by flanking Berbatov with Nani and Antonio Valencia against Fulham a week earlier, but his season has certainly been undermined by Hernandez's increasing involvement, a fact which Ferguson recognised.
"It is unfortunate for Dimitar because he is a fantastic player,'' said Ferguson of Berbatov's present plight. "But the reasons are obvious. The emergence of Hernandez in the last couple of months has been startling. He is improving all the time and is getting stronger. It is very difficult to leave a player out when he hits that kind of form. Every manager and every player in the country has faced that situation in their career when someone emerges to challenge you. It is the horrible part of being a footballer.''
Signed from Guadalajara as a virtual unknown prior to the World Cup, Hernandez scored his 18th goal of the season in Tuesday's Champions League triumph over Chelsea and has earned comparisons from his manager, not only with United hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but England striking legend Gary Lineker.
"I really didn't expect Hernandez to have this impact,'' Ferguson said. "As we said to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, we thought his first season would be about integration. Solskjaer played in a few reserves games and scored a hat-trick against Leeds. After that (coach) Jim Ryan came to me and said he is a first-team player. We made him a sub the following week against Blackburn and he scored.
"The only advantage for Hernandez was that he'd played in the World Cup so there was a profile attached to him and he had also come from a much tougher domestic competition.''
Two goals in South Africa had indicated Hernandez was going to prove a bargain at £7 million and when he scored a ridiculous goal on his debut in the Community Shield, where he fired the ball into the Chelsea net by smacking the ball into his own face, Hernandez instantly avoided the growing demand for a goal that proved to be Diego Forlan's undoing at United.
Although Hernandez had added six more before the turn of the year, it was his New Year's Day matchwinner at West Brom that really triggered a transformation. That late effort at the Hawthorns was the first in a run of 11 goals in 17 games, six of which he has started on the substitutes' bench.
"Hernandez is fantastic at taking up positions inside the penalty box,'' Ferguson said. "It is natural. He has the instinct to move around and his timing is terrific. There have only been a few top strikers who have had that quality. Ole was one and Gary Lineker probably never scored a good goal in his life, but he was always in space. He'd get rebounds off goalkeepers and was always in really good areas.''
Hernandez's emergence has definitely answered the very public question marks Rooney raised about United's ability to recruit high-class players during his much-publicised contract stand-off last year.
"I don't think he really meant that,'' laughed Ferguson. "I think he was prompted on that one. He probably thought he could make me angry.''

City team news

Mancini must come up with a makeshift forward line for Manchester City's date with destiny.
With skipper Tevez ruled out by a hamstring injury, Mancini must decide whether to include Balotelli, Dzeko or both for the mouth-watering clash with United.
Micah Richards returns after three weeks out with his own hamstring problem, while David Silva and Nigel de Jong will be included after failing to make the starting line-up for Monday's defeat at Liverpool.

United team news

Rooney's suspension provides the only selection dilemma to Ferguson, with Dimitar Berbatov likely to be drafted back into the starting XI alongside Javier Hernandez.
The only other absentee for United is Darren Fletcher, with the Scotland international still a couple of weeks away from a return following an illness.
With a virtually fully-fit squad from which to select, there is intense competition for places within the United ranks - with Rafael, Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia all pushing for recalls.
