Liverpool fans have their say on Emre Can - 'If it's not about money then what is it about about?'

It wasn't a question Emre Can particularly cared for.

"Why do you ask me this?" he told the ECHO's James Pearce. "Really, I concentrate on this season and let my agent handle all the rest.”

The question, of course, referred to his future at Liverpool . Can is in the final six months of his Reds contract, and there is no sign of a resolution. Juventus are lurking, and a number of other top European clubs have been linked.

“It is not about money, that’s all I can say," Can added when speaking to the ECHO on Wednesday evening.

“Yes I could (sign a pre-contract with another club next month), but tomorrow I could also sign for Liverpool. We’ll see.”
Unsurprisingly, Can's comments have got Reds fans talking. They often do.

Brighton defender highlights Liverpool's big weakness - and it's not their defenders

Brighton defender Liam Rosenior believes Liverpool's major weakness is that they lack a top-class holding midfielder.

Rosenior, whose side entertain the Reds at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, says there's "an air of vulnerability" about
Jurgen Klopp's men defensively because the backline aren't afforded sufficient protection.

Captain Jordan Henderson has played that role for most of this season with Emre Can taking over for the midweek win at Stoke.

"I’ve seen them play exciting, attacking and breathless football this season but there has always been an air of vulnerability in their defence with numerous individual defensive players being singled out and criticised for poor performance in the media," Rosenior wrote in his Guardian column.

"I would instead point to the fact that these players always seem to be defending in isolation, without protection from a specialist, top-class defensive midfield player who stops counterattacks and in turn protects them from in front of the back four.

"Players such as Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Gini Wijnaldum are outstanding midfielders in their own right but none are what you would call a natural anchorman who is happy to forgo the attacking, creative side of their game to sit in front of their defensive line and give balance to protect them from counterattack.

"In the current transfer market, where the value of players is more inflated than ever, we all want that 20-goal-a-season striker, a winger or attacking midfielder who guarantees 15 assists a year or a goalkeeper who keeps 20 clean sheets.
"However, those unselfish, tactically adept, positional midfielders whose effect on a game cannot be quantified yet are sometimes unnoticed are worth their weight in gold."
