Kenya imekiri kuwa imekuwa ikipoteza watalii kwenda Tanzania miaka ya hivi karibuni.

Akizungumza kwenye kituo cha runinga ya Citizen nchini Kenya, waziri wa utalii nchini Kenya, Najib Balala, aliezea wasi wasi kuhusu hali ya mahoteli nchini Kenya, akisema kuwa ukosefu wa hoteli za viwango vya kimataifa nchini Kenya imechangia Tanzania kuwa chaguo la watalii kanda hii ya Afrika Mashariki.

"Sababu ambayo ilichangia Tanzania kufanya vyema kutuliko mwaka 2017 ni kwa sababu hoteli zao ni mpya na za kisasa wakati hoteli zetu zikiwa ni za miaka 40 iliyopita," alisema Balala.

Balala alisema kuwa licha ya idadi ya watalii wanaowasili Kenya kuongezeka kutoka 1,342,899 mwaka 2016 hadi 1,474,671 mwaka 2017, Kenya ina uwezo wa kuwavutia watalii zaidi ikiwa hoteli na huduma kwa wateja zitaboreshwa.

"Changamoto kubwa tuliyo nayo sasa ni usalama. Mpaka wetu na Somalia pia unaleta wasiwasi na hofu kwa wageni wetu," alisema Balala.

Balala alisema kuwa Kenya inalenga kuwavutia watalii milioni 2.5 kila mwaka ifikapo mwaka 2022, akiongeza kuwa serikali imefanya mazungumzo na wamiliki wa hoteli kuhusu viwango ambavyo hoteli zinastahili kuwa navyo.

Idadi ya watalii wa kigeni wanaozuru Tanzania imekuwa ikipanda tangu ivuke watalii milioni moja kwa mwaka kwa mara ya kwanza mwaka 2012.

Kulingana na wizara ya utalii, watalii 1,137,182 waliingia nchini Tanzania mwaka 2015 na idadi hiyo ikapanda hadi watalii 1,284,279 mwaka 2016.

Utalii uliiletea Tanzania dola bilioni 2.3 mwaka uliopita kutoka dola bilioni 2 mwaka 2016. Mapato ya mwaka 2015 yalikuwa ni dola bilioni 1.9.
