Antwerp, Belgium – August 2025
The Tanzanian diaspora football team in Sweden, popularly known as
Kilimanjaro, has secured the
Serengeti Cup championship for the fourth year in a row. The tournament was hosted in the Belgian city of Antwerp and brought together East African diaspora teams from across Europe.
The Final Match
Kilimanjaro successfully defended their title by defeating fellow Tanzanian side
Leeds Swahili from the United Kingdom in a thrilling
2–1 final.
- Feisal Amir and Fryad Sabri scored for Kilimanjaro.
- Murtaza Fuad netted the lone goal for Leeds Swahili.
Trophy Presentation
The trophy was officially presented to Kilimanjaro captain
Abbas Bachu by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Belgium,
Jestas Nyamanga. In a symbolic gesture, the captain then handed the trophy to
Mobhare Matinyi, Tanzania’s Ambassador to Sweden, underlining the team’s strong connection with the Tanzanian community in Europe.
About Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro currently plays in Sweden’s
sixth division league system, which consists of seven tiers. Despite competing at an amateur level domestically, the team has proven itself as a dominant force in diaspora competitions.
The Serengeti Cup
The Serengeti Cup, launched in
2021, has now been staged
four times and is sponsored by
NBC Bank and
ASAS of Tanzania. Its mission is to:
- Unite Tanzanians living abroad
- Promote football talent within the diaspora
- Showcase Tanzania internationally
This year’s edition featured
15 teams of Tanzanians and East Africans living in Europe, including:
- 10 Tanzanian teams from Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Scotland, Germany, and France
- 3 teams from Burundi
- 1 team from Rwanda
- 1 team from Somalia
