KLM and Lufthansa to BOTH begin Zanzibar; fast-growing from Europe
KLM is to begin Zanzibar on 10 December 2020, followed by Lufthansa from Frankfurt on 31 March. Zanzibar will be KLM’s sixth destination in East Africa after Dar Es Salaam, Entebbe, Kigali, Kilimanjaro, and Nairobi. And it will be Lufthansa’s fourth, after Addis Ababa and Nairobi and, also coming, Mombasa.
KLM and Lufthansa are both to begin Zanzibar, Tanzania, and both carriers will have direct competition.
KLM will start on 10 December, with a twice-weekly service using 294-seat B787-9s. It’ll route Amsterdam – Zanzibar – Dar Es Salaam – Amsterdam.
Lufthansa, meanwhile, will launch Frankfurt – Zanzibar on 31 March. Its twice-weekly offering by A330-300s will be via Mombasa – also new – in both directions.
KLM’s announcement builds on Cairo, Cork, and Southampton so far starting/restarting in 2020. These will be joined by Poznan from 25 October and Riyadh from 7 December. Austin is now expected to begin in 2021.
Lufthansa’s new Frankfurt – Mombasa – Zanzibar will be joined in S21 by 13 short-haul and similarly very outbound leisure services. This includes six new routes to Greece.
Lufthansa is focusing more than ever on the local German market, hardly surprising at the moment. Indeed, in 2020 it has started Gran Canaria, Rhodes, and Tenerife South from Frankfurt.

Europe – Zanzibar has grown well in recent years, with 367,000 seats recorded in 2019. This was by up 148%, or 219,000, over 2015.
Neos was the largest European operator to the Tanzanian island, with 107,000 seats. The second was Turkish Airlines, which began Zanzibar in 2016; this airline accounts for most of the recent growth.
Last year we analysed Turkish Airlines and the MEB3’s total network distribution. Turkish Airlines had by far the most weekly frequencies to/from Africa.
Zanzibar was linked to 12 European airports in 2019, so pre-coronavirus. Milan Malpensa was by far the top with three in ten seats.
Not surprisingly, Italy was the leading country for non-stop service to Zanzibar, with four Italian airports having just under half of all seats. Germany was third after Turkey.

Zanzibar – Europe; sixth freedoms also key
Aside from non-stops, discussed above, sixth freedom operators were also key to Europe. In particular, Ethiopian Airlines, flydubai (and also with Emirates to Europe), Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines.
In the randomly chosen week beginning 16 December 2019, Ethiopian had a daily service using a hodgepodge of aircraft: A350-900s, B737-800s, B777-200LRs, and B787-8s and -9s. Its A350s were used most and they routed via Kilimanjaro in both directions.
We explored Ethiopian’s network in February.
flydubai, meanwhile, had a 14-weekly service. Of these, seven terminated in Zanzibar, while the other half continued to Dar Es Salaam and back via Zanzibar.
We looked at flydubai’s closer-than-ever relationship with Emirates earlier this year.
Across all carriers, the largest unserved European markets were Paris, London, Vienna, Munich, and Copenhagen, with Paris by far number-one.

EGYPTIAN Airline, Egyptair, is set to start direct flights from Cairo to Zanzibar, a move which is expected to boost the Isles tourism sector and enhance business between the two countries.
Egyptair vice president, Mr Mohamed Alabbady confirmed his carrier's intention to launch a direct scheduled flight between Cairo International Airport and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in the near future when he paid a courtesy call on President Ali Mohamed Shein, yesterday.

TANZANIA Airport Authority (TAA) advisory board made its first visit to the Msalato International airport site, weeks after the government started screening bidders to construct the much-awaited airfield.
Board Chairman Dr Masatu Chiguma expressed satisfaction at the pace of implementing the construction work, stressing that the new airport and ongoing renovation will boost the air transport arrivals in the region and across the country.
According to the chairman, the expansion work at the Dodoma airport will help increase the number of arrivals that had recently suffered due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"We have witnessed a substantial increase in the number of arrivals and aircrafts landing at the airport over the past five years. This number is expected to increase after the world fully gets to normalcy," he noted.
He added that the board was impressed to see the site where the construction work of the international airport in Dodoma would soon start.
Dr Chiguma urged the airport authority to ensure that it fairly compensates people who paved way for the construction of the airport.
In 2019, the government received over 272million US dollars concessional loan from the African Development Bank to build the largest state-of-the-art airport in the country's capital.
The authority said the screening process was currently gaining momentum and that construction work would begin soon.
Bertha Bankwa, the Dodoma Airport Manager, said the tender had long been floated. She told reporters that the board also visited other projects going on at the Dodoma airport.
They include the expansion of the runway by 250 metres to 30 metres, extension of the airport apron as well as the taxiway.
Engineer Focus Kadeghe, the project manager, said the expansion work would allow Airbus 220-300 to land and turn at the Dodoma Airport.
"We have been able to complete expansion of the parking yard to accommodate at least 80 vehicles, up from only 30," he said.
The additional 250 metres makes the Dodoma Airport qualify into Code 4 C of airports classification and it will now have a total of 2,750 metres of runway.
The planned Msalato International Airport will be seating at a 45 square kilometres area and its runway will be 3600 metres by 60 metres, allowing any aircraft to land and take off.
It will be classified at code 4E according to experts.
