OPPOSITION parties said yesterday that they were not always against the government, promised to support it where it does well and criticise it when it errs.
National Chairman of the Civic United Front (CUF), Prof Ibrahim Lipumba told a rally at Jangwani grounds in Dar es Salaam yesterday after a demonstration that the Opposition only had the best interests of the nation at heart and wanted to see action taken against perpetrators of graft.
Prof Lipumba said the government should form a committee of prominent and ethical people, to look into all past government contracts that seem dubious.
The demonstration was organised by an umbrella of opposition parties to protest what they termed as controversial acquisition of a radar system by the government in 2002.
It was a calm demonstration escorted by police officers that started at Ubungo, through Morogoro Road to Jangwani grounds where leaders addressed a crowd of between 400 and 500 people, who were later in the evening scheduled to have a communal meal.
On their opinion about the new draft bill on corruption, all the opposition leaders present at the rally said that they had not read the document as yet, so they could not comment.
Opposition leaders who were present were Mr Augustine Mrema of Tanzania Labour Party (TLP), Mr John Cheyo of United Democratic Party (UDP) and Mr James Mbatia of NCCR-Mageuzi. There were also Members of Parliament from Opposition parties.
