Michael Cox highlighted one snapshot from Liverpool’s build-up that says everything.

At one moment against Newcastle, Gravenberch, Macca and Szoboszlai were almost in a vertical line.

That image tells the story.

When three midfielders stack like that, Liverpool lose horizontal balance. If possession breaks down, there is too much central space to recover and protect.

This is the analytical edge most fans miss: shape is not just about where players stand in possession. It is about what happens one second later if the ball is lost.

Liverpool looked exciting going forward.

They also looked one bad touch away from being cut open.

According to Michael Cox in The Athletic, Alexis Mac Allister came on in the deeper role, while Gravenberch was pushed higher into a more natural No.8 position.

That is a serious talking point.

Under Slot, Liverpool often leaned the other way. But Iraola’s switch suggests he may already be thinking about a different balance.

And the logic is obvious:
Mac Allister offers control and positioning deeper, while Gravenberch higher up can drive forward without carrying the same structural burden.

That might not be the final answer. But it might be the clearest clue yet about where Iraola sees this midfield going.

LIVERPOOL’S MIDFIELD IS TOO EASY TO BYPASS

Liverpool’s biggest issue against Newcastle was not just the result. It was how easily the game ran straight through the middle of them.

Michael Cox in The Athletic called it Andoni Iraola’s “first big task” — fixing a midfield that was too open whenever Liverpool lost the ball.

That is the key point.

This was not one bad transition. It happened twice, and both goals came from Liverpool being too easy to counter through central areas. When the spacing goes, the whole structure goes.

That is why this is bigger than one player having a poor moment.

Liverpool do not just need better defending. They need better rest-defence structure.
