Raheem Sterling's acrimonious departure from Liverpool to move to their rivals Manchester City was one of the most bitter transfer sagas in recent memory. Now, the full truth behind the England international's move has come out.
According to Sami Mokbel in the-Daily Mail, Brendan Rodgers played as big a part in Sterling's departure as he did in his progression through the youth ranks to
In that report, it details the 'fourteen words' that proved to be the beginning of the end for Sterling at Liverpool.-
"He has been offered a wonderful deal, an incredible deal for a young player," said Rodgers during his pre-Tottenham press conference.-
Those comments left Sterling and his advisors bemused, apparently, as they viewed it as a cheap ploy from Rodgers to get the player to sign.-
Then, more stories emerged that Sterling would sign the new contract, but that was wide of the mark and when Sterling was harangued by his own fans on the final day of last season at the Britannia Stadium, that proved to be the final nail of the coffin.-
However, Sterling and Rodgers remained on speaking terms, for the time being at least. But the contract debacle became increasingly unsavoury and the relationship between player and club broke down to the point where it was irreparable.-
When rumours of Manchester City's interest became prominent and news filtered out of his contract rejection, Sterling gradually noticed that he was no longer the golden-boy at Liverpool and was hurt by the images being painted of him as a youngster chasing more money. He felt alone and defenceless.-
These feelings are what prompted his now infamous unauthorised BBC interview which ultimately proved to be a pivotal moment.
After he came to the realisation that he would no longer be a Liverpool player come the summer, Sterling was left to make the decision between Chelsea, Manchester United and City. He opted for City and left for ?49m.-
It's fair to say that Sterling made a few mistakes, but it's important to consider both sides of the coin and, if the Daily Mail's report is to be believed, he was certainly not alone in paving the way for his departure from Liverpool.-
