Chelsea fans may not see Michael Essien in action until next season after the club confirmed he will miss the crucial Premier League clash with Stoke this weekend.

Essien has not played for his club since tearing a hamstring against APOEL in the Champions League back in December 2009, then he picked up a knee injury when representing Ghana at African Nations Cup.

The 27-year-old has had a complicated and difficult rehab and he is now a major doubt for the rest of the campaign.

"Michael Essien will not be in the squad for the weekend's game against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge,'' said a club spokesman. "The Ghanaian's participation in the remainder of the campaign is now in doubt, with only four games to play including the FA Cup Final on May 15.''
