The 2026 Daegu Marathon (Daegu Marathon), featuring around 40,000 marathoners from home and abroad, will be held on the 22nd. The prize money has also been set at the world’s highest level.
According to Daegu City on the 19th, this year’s 25th edition of the event will take place around Daegu Stadium in Suseong District and various urban areas. It consists of four categories: the elite full course (42.195 km), the masters full course, a 10.9 km run, and a health run of around 5 km.
After registration opened on September 17 last year, it was closed early after 21 days due to an overwhelming response of 41,254 participants from around the world. Participants include last year’s elite course men’s winner, Tanzanian runner Gabriel Gerald Gayi, and women’s winner, Ethiopian runner Meseret Berete.
The winning prize for this year’s event is $200,000 (approximately 290 million Korean won), the largest in Daegu Marathon history. This is a 25% increase from last year’s $160,000 and exceeds the $150,000 prize of the Boston Marathon in the U.S., known for its high prize money.
A Daegu City official said, “The prize money was set to match the status of the Daegu Marathon as a global marathon festival.” The Daegu Marathon currently holds a ‘Gold Label’ status from World Athletics (WA). It is just one step away from achieving the highest ‘Platinum Label’ status.
On the day of the event, the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency will control the course, including Daegu Stadium and urban areas, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Controlled sections include areas around Daegu Stadium, Beomeo Crossroad, Dusan Crossroad, Daegu Bank Crossroad, Cheongna Hill Station, Seomun Market, Dongdaegu Station, Ayanggyo Station, Yulha Station, and Beoman-ro.
Hwangbo Ran, Director of Daegu City’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Department, said, “We will minimize inconvenience to citizens, and we ask residents to check the detour routes in advance through the Daegu City website.”
