Battle: Dar es Salaam vs Nairobi

GoT does not get $3.5 billion.
Usichojua the GoT inapata 60% ya all mining proceeds kwenye migodi through corporate tax 30% free carried share 16 -34%, royalties 6%, skill development levy 3% jumlisha hizo zote unapata percentage ya hela inayoenda serikalini out of total proceeds from the mining projects.

Tanzania records steady growth in mining sector in 2021: minister

Source: Xinhua| 2022-03-11 00:19:43|

DAR ES SALAAM, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's mining sector contribution to the national economy increased to 7.3 percent in 2021 from 6.5 percent recorded in 2020, an official said on Thursday.
Doto Biteko, the east African nation's Minister for Minerals, said the government's projection is to see the mining sector contributes 10 percent to the national economy by 2025 but this could be realized much earlier.
Biteko told a press conference in the capital Dodoma that the mining sector made history in the past one year when mineral sales reached 8.3 trillion Tanzanian shillings (about 3.6 billion U.S. dollars and the government collected 597.53 billion Tanzanian shillings in taxes and royalties.
Biteko said Tanzanians' participation in the mining sector services increased from 43 percent to 63 percent when mining services collections were 579.3 million U.S. dollars.
He attributed achievements in the mining sector to reforms undertaken under the administration of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, including the improvement of mining conditions for artisanal miners who contributed to 30 percent of mining activities in the country.
Biteko said the reforms have led to the creation of at least 44 gold trading centers and 70 other minerals trading centers across the country which have helped to stop smuggling of minerals outside the country. ■

President Joe Biden’s Kenya’s ambassador nominee Meg Whitman has revealed her plan to push for increased business for American tech giants in Kenya.

Ms Whitman, an American billionaire who cut her teeth in California’s Silicon Valley, amassing a Sh575 billion fortune, told American lawmakers the plan that will see the US possibly overturn the dominance of Chinese firms includes linking American tech giants like Facebook, Apple and Alphabet’s Google to local deals.

“Kenya is well-positioned to be an African leader in information technology, telecommunications, and mobile banking and is open to partnering with the United States,” she said recently when she appeared before the US Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health Policy.

“Working with Kenya to assemble the infrastructure, connectivity, and expertise needed to help build the country’s ‘Silicon Savannah’ will be a big part of my mission, and an opportunity I hope numerous US companies will eagerly embrace.”

The revelations by Ms Whitman who previously served as CEO of top US tech giants eBay and Hewlett-Packard underline fresh plans by the Biden administration to topple Chinese dominance in the country’s vibrant ICT sector.

Dubbed ‘Silicon Savannah’, Kenya has emerged as a major player in the fintech space since telecoms operator Safaricom pioneered its M-Pesa mobile money service in 2007 for people without access to the formal banking network.

Microsoft, for instance, recently opened a Sh3 billion office and labs for its premier engineering hub, the African Development Centre (ADC), after three years of operation in Kenya.

And in 2019, Chinese telecoms firm Huawei inked a loan deal to develop the Konza project at a cost of 17.5 billion shillings.

American tech firms like their Chinese peers have been seeking a larger share of the Kenyan market.

Ms Whitman’s planned “techplomacy” which could build up on an earlier position by the US is, however, expected to be an uphill task at a time Chinese firms have entrenched themselves in Kenya.

The US has been urging its European allies and others not to use Huawei, one of Safaricom’s network vendors along with Nokia, citing security concerns.

In 2020, Britain announced it was reversing the decision to let Huawei participate in its 5G network following pressure from the US.

It ordered a ban on the Chinese firm’s equipment from its fifth-generation networks by the end of 2027.

Joe Mucheru, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for ICT, said the US pressure on countries to ditch Huawei in new networks is politically motivated and not based on evidence showing it would enable Chinese spying.

Export of horticulture produce from Kisumu to the United Kingdom will resume
mid-June following a three-month break occasioned by a decline in production.
This will see Kenya Airways resume direct cargo flights from the region, performing three shipments of fresh produce weekly from the previous single trip as the demand for cargo transport picks up at the lakeside city.
The national carrier will also resume shipment of cargo to the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands at the end of this month.
According to horticulture stakeholders, the projected chilli harvest is sufficient to sustain three flights a week from Kisumu to the UK.

“From our assessment, we now have enough chilli that can sustain up to three flights a week starting next month. The resumption of direct flights will come as a boost to farmers,” said Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya chief executive Okisegere Ojepat.
Consignments to the UAE and the Netherlands will include avocados, bananas and pineapples as Kenya seeks to increase its horticultural exports that generated Sh153 billion in revenue last year.
This comes as stakeholders in the horticultural sector have started a branding partnership with Kenyan foreign missions and embassies in Europe and Asia to market Kenya’s avocado and bananas overseas as the country seeks to diversify its reach globally.
Part of the branding entails a digital infrastructure to enhance exporter and buyer interphase in a bid to shore up export volumes. Last year, Kenya's avocado and banana exports were valued at Sh14.4 billion and Sh3.6 billion shillings respectively.

Airlifting of freight from Kisumu to the world market has been necessitated by the expansion of the airport to encompass a cargo handling and cold storage facility through a public-private partnership.
The cold storage facility a local investor owns will go a long way in enabling the airport to establish a full-fledged cargo division and cold chain logistics.
Farmers are expected to venture into value-addition and fish processing to tap into existing markets. Other commodities set for export from Kisumu are fish, mangoes, pineapples, peanuts, traditional green vegetables and organic beef.
