Little-known Kenyan firms using technology to reach underserved markets have emerged as the fastest-growing businesses in Africa, according to a new report that ranks Nairobi as the third-largest home for the quickest expanding companies on the continent.

The inaugural FT annual ranking of Africa’s fastest-growing companies shows that 10 of 75 such firms are located in Kenya.

Except for retailer Quick Mart and agricultural inputs distributor East African Business Company Ltd, the Kenyan fastest-expanding firms on the FT list, including two which topped the continent, leverage technology in offering products.

Wasoko, the platform, which delivers fast-moving consumer goods to kiosks and shops in Kenya’s fragmented informal markets, has been ranked the fastest-growing business on the continent in the FT’s inaugural survey.

The firm, which in March rebranded from Sokowatch after raising $125 million (Sh14.37 billion) for first-phase expansion (series B funding ), had the highest compounded annual growth (CAGR) in revenues of 346.2 percent in four years through 2020.

Wasoko — which also offers a line of credit for retailers — grew revenue to about $27.4 million (Sh3.15 billion) in 2020 from $0.3 million (Sh34.5 million) in 2017, raising the number of its employees to 372 from 57 in the review period.

“Wasoko… is one of several on the continent seeking to cut the cost of doing business in the massive informal commerce sector, by helping to deliver goods to traders more efficiently,” the UK daily said.

“Many of the fastest-growing companies, especially in the fintech sector, are those seeking to tap Africa’s unbanked population or markets that have previously been underserved or ignored,” FT wrote in Africa’s Fastest Growing Companies 2022 report.

Kenya’s fintech startup, Flocash emerged second in Africa after its annual revenue growth averaged 274.70 percent, climbing to $6.4 million (Sh736 million) in 2020 from $0.1 million (Sh11.5 million) four years earlier.

The e-commerce platform, which allows merchants to make payments between Africa and the Middle East, has a staff count of 82 from 20 in 2017.

Lori Systems, which provides real-time information on long-haul transport services (e-logistics solutions), was the third Kenyan company in the top 10 fastest-growing firms on the continent after ranking seventh.

Lori’s revenue climbed to $25 million (Sh2.87 billion) from $2.9 million (Sh333.5 million) in the review period, posting a CAGR of 105.10 percent and raising the staff count to 142 from 20 employees in 2017.

Kenya’s growth-hungry retailer Quick Mart is, perhaps, the most easily recognisable firm on the list, ranking 11th on the continent. The retailer’s turnover climbed three-fold in the review period to $162.1 million (Sh18.64 billion) from $40.4 million (Sh4.64 billion), with employees increasing to 3,265 from 708.

Quick Mart’s CAGR of 60.2 percent came amid a majority stake acquisition by Africa-focused Adenia Partners, which has largely seen its stores increase to 46 last year from 11 in September 2019 when the deal was closed.

The supermarket chain opened the largest number of stores (six) last year, beating the market leader, Naivas, which added five more outlets to its network.

“There was PE [private equity] funds entry into two of the large players and those PE funds were part of what was fuelling that expansion,” Wambui Mabrire, the chief executive of Retail Trade Association of Kenya, told the Business Daily.

Kenya’s other fastest-growing firms are communications solutions company Africa’s Talking which ranked 13th, e-commerce platform Copia Kenya (20th), non-deposit taking microfincier ASA International Kenya (32nd) and farm inputs distributor East African Business Company.

Others are asset financier M-Kopa (51st) and information systems consultancy Impax Business Solutions (67th).

Kenya is the third most represented country in the ranking, with nine companies, behind South Africa (24) and Nigeria (20), and ahead of Egypt (six).

Oct 25. 2021 The system is located on six different sites which were modernized and offers full country-wide air traffic management and surveillance coverage and successful completion of the final two sites took place during the worldwide pandemic.

Following a contract signed in August 2017, Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) and Thales have successfully completed the delivery of the Air Traffic Management system and radars, enhancing Tanzania’s air traffic safety and efficiency.

TCAA’s mission is to ensure safety, security and regularity of civil aviation in Tanzania through effective oversight, provision of efficient air navigation services and training while maintaining quality, protecting the environment and safeguarding the interest of stakeholders.

The modernization program involved the installation of ATC surveillance radars and TopSky - ATC at six different locations in Tanzania, including Songwe, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, Zanzibar and Arusha airports.

Integrated with existing sensors, Thales's co-mounted STAR NG Primary approach radar with RSM970S Mode S en-route secondary radar together with TopSky - ATC enable the automation of en-route, approach and tower control centers, providing a highly accurate view of the air traffic.

Furthermore, the RSM 970S secondary radar Mode S downloads aircraft parameters that gives the controller early notice of aircraft evolution (speed, heading …) and the clearances (e.g. altitude selected by the pilot), as well as providing the ACAS Resolution Advisory Report. All of this real-time data enables the controller to have the correct information in order to make the best decision at the right moment in time.

Dar Es Salam Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) is also equipped with an ATC simulator to train TCAA air traffic controllers and engineers.

The TopSky-ATC EFS (Electronic Flight Strip) replaces paper strips, taking track of every flight, allows Tanzanian Air traffic controllers to monitor safely and efficiently from a touchscreen real-time data updates and contributes to data sharing for collaborative decision-making. It also makes it easier for controllers to handle fluctuations in traffic volume, changing weather, and all types of situations that can impact air traffic control decisions at any time.

Thales TopSky – ATC monitors and controls more than 80% of African airspace, including 5 out of 6 upper airspace East African community states. More than 80 ATC radars are in operation across Africa, amongst 900 surveillance radars in operation worldwide.

“Implementation of the Tanzania Radar Project with THALES has realized the intended surveillance objective of the Tanzanian airspace through enhanced safety, security and efficiency. The associated automation system has enabled more efficiency in managing revenue collection obtained from aircraft movements data base. Through this successful project TCAA is able to escalate ICAO standards to the highest level.” Hamza Johari, Director General, Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority.
"It is my pleasure to welcome TCAA as the newest member of the Thales TopSky user family. We take pride in working hand in hand with our customers to deliver top-of-the-line turnkey systems that address their specific needs. Together, we are shaping the future of air travel by making it more safe and more efficient for a better and greener tomorrow." Christophe Salomon, Executive Vice President Land & Air Systems, Thales.

The construction sector grew by 6.6 per cent in 2021 as the roads sub-sector received “a significant boost” from Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).
The length of paved superhighways, international trunk roads and national roads increased from 11,000 kilometres as of mid-year 2020 to 11, 100 kilometres as of June 30, 2021, the Economic Survey 2022 indicates.
“Consequently, the total length of paved roads increased by 2.3 per cent to 21, 800 kilometres.
The National Government expenditure on roads is expected to increase by 6.1 per cent, from Sh195.3 billion in 2020/21 to Sh207.2 billion in 2021/22,” says the report released yesterday.

During the review period, employment in the sector increased, with private employment rising by 2.3 per cent to 217,300 employees.
Public employment in the sector also increased to 9,200 employees from 9,100, according to the report.

Credit advanced to the construction and real estate sectors by commercial banks went up from Sh526.5 billion in 2020 to Sh531.5 billion in 2021.
This was as the economy opened up and lenders started to advance loans to different industries.
In the year under review, the government completed 431 housing units at an estimated cost of Sh741.3 million as part of the affordable housing project, which is one of the government’s Big Four agenda.

The houses are being developed under the State Department for Housing. The government aims to develop half a million houses.
“As of December 2021, there were 3,480 housing units under construction by the State Department for Housing with an estimated cost of 6.9 billion,” the report noted.
The value of buildings completed in Nairobi County decreased by 11.9 per cent to Sh88.1 billion in 2021, with building plans approved by the county declining from Sh153.6 billion in 2020 to Sh102.9 billion in 2021.

The number of completed buildings within Nairobi declined to 13,350 from 16, 248 in 2020. For both public residential and private buildings completed, 2020 posted the highest numbers.

Last year saw the highest cement consumption of any year in the last five years, with 9.098 million tonnes of cement used over the period.
Several multi-billion-shilling road works, which were in progress as of December 2021, received their fair share of funding.
A few of them, including the Nairobi Expressway, Mombasa Kwa Jomvu Road, Nyaru to Iten, Link Road to Lamu Port, Kigoro-Gesure-Itibo-Masongo Roads and Busia to MAlaba roads, were nearing completion as of December.
Six Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) lines were also under rehabilitation in the year, with over 1014.5 kilometres of railway lines either being constructed or undergoing rehabilitation.
