Dodoma. Tanzanian farmers and traders sold 89, 725.35 million tonnes of maize in Kenya, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between July 2020 and December 2020, the Parliament was told.

Also, the Cereals and Other Produce Board (CPB) has bought 24, 829.17 tonnes of maize from Farmers.

The ministry also said the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) purchased 73,831.15 tonnes of maize worth Sh48.42 billion from farmers and their respective groups between May and December 2020 from all eight zones.

Deputy minister of Agriculture Hussein Bashe released the figures on Monday, May 3, 2021 when responding to a question from Special Seats MP, Dr Pindi Chana (CCM-Njombe Region) during the

Question and Answers session.

Dr Chana sought to know how the government was organized to look for reliable maize markets for Njombe farmers.

Speaking at the Parliament, Mr Bashe said, 11,004 tonnes of maize purchased by NFRA from the eight zones came from the Makambako zone that constitute Njombe Region that produced 332,457 tonnes of maize in the 2019/20 season.

"In the 2021/2022 fiscal year, the government is considering to introduce bonded warehouses in countries with high markets of agricultural produce including China, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan in order to preserve and advertise agricultural produce something to easen selling of the produce in respective countries," he said.

Earlier, Mr Bashe outlined four issues including connecting flight farmers with maize processors producing flour and livestock feeds as well as the government purchasing maize through the NFRA and CPB.

"Other measures are reaching agreements with other countries like Kenya, DRC, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and ensure transporters are given necessary services immediately including permits," he said.

He said in the 2020/21, Njombe was connected with the Silverland Company that managed to purchase 40,000 to 50,000 tonnes of the produce.

Baba haya makampuni hayaamini sheria zetu! Hamna mtu anaweza kuwekeza $3.5 bln kwa kutumia sheria za nchi za Africa! Ndo maana headquarters zipo huko! Hata makampuni SA yanatumia London courts! JPM kajaribu kwenye suala la Twiga gold ila nangoja utekelezaji wake!

Yaani ndo hivyo mzee siwezi kushangaa ila kumbuka Mseveni si mjinga nampa big up sana kuwezesha refinery ya 60,000 barrels per day kujengwa Uganda! Kumbuka sie refinery za dhahabu zinafunguliwa sasa! Tena baada ya vita ya JPM! Hizo 60,000 barrels per day zita-trigger expansion ya refinery capacity in less than 5 years upon the start of crude refining!

Tanzania gold refinery starts producing in drive to boost gold revenues

By Reuters Staff
2 MIN READ

DAR ES SALAAM, April 29 (Reuters) - A new gold refinery set to be the biggest in Tanzania has begun production in a step towards the government’s aim of processing more of the precious metal domestically.

Africa’s fourth-biggest gold producer and home to industrial gold mines run by Barrick, AngloGold Ashanti and others, Tanzania has been trying to formalise subsistence gold mining and develop refineries to generate more revenue from the sector.

The refinery in Mwanza, a city on Lake Victoria, is processing gold from sources including subsistence or “artisanal” miners, Tanzania’s State Mining Corporation (STAMICO), a 25% shareholder, said.

Subsistence miners have been estimated to number around 1 - 1.5 million in Tanzania, though the actual number could be much higher. Gold mining has become more attractive as prices jumped.

“Our major source of raw gold will be from artisanal miners, middle and larger miners. We also expect raw gold from neighbouring countries,” Venance Mwasse, acting managing director of STAMICO told Reuters by phone. He did not specify from which other countries he expects gold.

Mwanza Precious Metal Refinery refined 47 kilogrammes of gold on its first day of operations on April 21 and has capacity to refine up to 480 kilogrammes of gold per day at 99.99% purity, Mwasse said.

Dubai-based Rozella General Trading LLC and Singapore-based ACME Consultant Engineers PTE Ltd together hold a 75% stake in the refinery, according to a statement from STAMICO which did not specify the individual shares held by Rozella and ACME.

Spot gold was trading at $1,764.50 per ounce on Thursday.

Rozella General Trading did not respond to an emailed request for comment. Reuters could not immediately contact ACME Consultant Engineers PTE Ltd.

Mwasse said the refinery plans to help artisanal miners produce more gold, and has met with dealers and brokers to bring in more gold.

Kenya’s mining industry still ‘weighed down by weak regulations’

Kenya's mining industry still 'weighed down by weak regulations'

Kenya’s mining industry has not had been negatively impacted by effects of the COVID-19 pandemic but it is still weighed down by weak regulations.

According to Stephen Kuria, Chairman of the Mineral Rights Board, revenue from gold is a tip of the iceberg as most of the minerals are smuggled out of the country.

“Kenya can borrow a leaf from countries like Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana and Australia which have created unique law enforcers who concentrate on illegal smuggling of gold and gemstones,” he said during a webinar on Kenya’s extractive industry on Thursday.

Mr. Kuria said illegal gold trade is abetted by Chinese and Sri-Lankan merchants who offer miners more value for their products.
He also lamented that though small scale miners provide primary employment for an estimated 140,000 people, their activities have not been made official.

“Small scale gold miners contribute an estimated $30 million (Ksh. 3.2billion) into the Kenyan economy,” he said.

Mr. Kuria noted that Kenya has a potential of earning $6.6 billion (Ksh. 724.6billion) — equivalent to 12 per cent of the GDP — from the minerals sector.

On his part, Energy PS Andrew Kamau said an aerial mapping to determine the country’s mineral wealth is half complete, with completion of the exercise scheduled for June this year.

PS Kamau said only 4 per cent of the country is mapped yet data from the aerial survey is crucial in encouraging investments into the sector.

The sector’s contribution to GDP is reported to have slid from 2.5 per cent in 2014 to 0.8 per cent in 2018, equivalent to Ksh. 89billion.

This has been attributed to the fact that only two companies — Base Titanium (Kwale) and Tata Chemicals (Magadi) — shoulder 77 per cent of the sector’s economic burden.

Base Titanium and Tata Chemical control 88.7 per cent and 48.9 per cent of the market shares respectively.

In 2018, the Government said it plans to set up a gold refinery to help small scale miners in the west of the country. The Petroleum and Mining Ministry said it was seeking consultants to advise on the construction of the refinery.

Kenya has proven deposits of titanium, gold and coal but its mining sector is a relatively small contributor to national output. However, revenues are expected to grow as new mines start production.

The new refiner will provide services to help vulnerable, artisanal and small scale miners and other local producers meet international standards, the ministry said in a statement.

“The aim of the project is to improve the livelihoods of the beneficiary community, regional economy and that of Kenya as a whole,” the ministry said, adding that the refinery will also create new jobs.

While Kenya is a small gold producer, it has attracted investors like London-listed Goldplat Plc, which operates a mine in south western Kenya.

Kenya’s most successful mining operation has been Base Titanium, whose $305 million project shipped its first mineral consignment in 2014.
