Mugabe faces pressure to step down

HARARE, Zimbabwe

State media gave Zimbabweans a hint of how President Robert Mugabe's embattled party might wage its campaign for a presidential runoff, with stories Thursday portraying the opposition as divided and controlled by former colonial ruler Britain. Mugabe's Deputy Information Minister Bright Matonga said the 84-year-old leader was ready for a runoff. The opposition claims it won the presidential race outright, and official results show it won the most parliament seats. "President Mugabe is going to fight. He is not going anywhere. He has not lost," Matonga told the British Broadcasting Corp. "We are going to go hard and fight and get the majority required."

Newspaper says Mugabe has conceded defeat

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has admitted to his family and advisers that he has lost the most important election of his 28-year rule, South African financial daily Business Day reported on Thursday.

Mugabe lost control of parliament for the first time since independence in 1980 and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said he had also been defeated in a presidential election last Saturday and should concede defeat.

Business Day said Mugabe had privately conceded defeat and was deciding if he should contest a run-off vote needed because MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai failed to secure a clear majority.

"Mugabe has conceded to his closest advisers, the army, police and intelligence chiefs. He has also told his family and personal advisers that he has lost the election," Business Day quoted an unidentified source as saying.

The newspaper said hardliners in Mugabe's government wanted him to see the contest through to the bitter end, but that personal advisers and his family want Mugabe to quit.

The ruling ZANU-PF and Mugabe's spokesman were not immediately available for comment.

Mugabe, known for his fierce and defiant rhetoric, has not been seen in public since the vote.

In final results of the election for parliament's lower house, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) won 99 seats, while Mugabe's ZANU-PF won 97 seats and a breakaway MDC faction won 10. One independent candidate won a seat.

Results for parliament's upper house, the senate, will be issued next.

No official results have emerged in the presidential vote.

Widely blamed for economic collapse of his once prosperous nation, Mugabe has faced growing discontent with the world's highest inflation rate of more than 100,000 percent, a virtually worthless currency and severe food and fuel shortages.

The opposition and international observers said Mugabe rigged the last presidential election in 2002. But some analysts say discontent over daily hardships is too great for him to fix the result this time without risking major unrest.

The mainstream MDC faction said its Tsvangirai had won 50.3 percent of the presidential vote and Mugabe 43.8 percent according to its own tallies.

Wanafiki tu. Si uliona Kibaki alipommwaga Moi? Hata siku Morgan akimmwaga Bob basi watammwagia sifa kedekede.

Zimbabwe will rejoice soon though that's not total salvation!

Shame on them!

Te he tehehehehehe!!

And that is African politics! Lets wait and see (I sincerly hope for the best).

*Upinzani dhabiti ulioshindwa uchaguzi ni bora kuliko upinzani dhaifu ulioshinda uchaguzi! Good luck Rhodesians .... oops sorry Zimbwabeans!

Malaysia would welcome Mugabe - ex-PM

WELCOME: Malaysia could provide refuge for Mugabe if he loses power

FORMER Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said today his country should welcome Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe if he goes into exile following elections in his country.

Mahathir, who is seen as a close Mugabe ally in the region, said he expected the Zimbabwean leader to accept the results of national polls in the African nation.

"If he wants to come here, the (Malaysian) government should welcome him," Mahathir told reporters. "If he has lost, he has to accept the decision of the people, that is the best thing he can do," he added.

Mahathir’s comments come amid fevered speculation over the past few days that Mugabe, who has been silent and has not appeared in public since voting on Saturday, has left the country for exile in a friendly state.

A foreign ministry official told AFP they were unaware of Mugabe’s plans.

The former Malaysian premier’s comments come as Zimbabwe’s ruling party geared up today for a final battle to save Mugabe’s 28-year presidency, saying it was ready for an election run-off with opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

State media said a run-off was now the most likely outcome after no clear winner emerged from Saturday’s polls. A government spokesman said Mugabe’s party was ready for a new battle in the second round. - AFP

Kwanini hayatangazwi?

Desmond Tutu urges Robert Mugabe to 'step down with dignity'

From correspondents in Cape Town
April 03, 2008 05:41am

SOUTH African Nobel peace prize winner Desmond Tutu says he hopes Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe will "step down with dignity" after last weekend's general elections.

"That is democracy. Democracy is, you change government when people decide," Tutu told reporters in Cape Town, as the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) was shown to have lost its parliamentary majority.

"I mean when your time is over, your time is over" he was quoted as saying by the SAPA news agency.

While the Zimbabwe electoral commission has held off from announcing results of the presidential poll, the opposition Movement for Democratic Change claims its leader Morgan Tsvangirai has secured a clear majority over Mugabe.

The former Anglican archbishop Tutu, once dubbed by Mugabe as "that evil little bishop", said the veteran Zimbabwean leader could have had a fantastic legacy had he stepped down a decade ago.

"He did a fantastic job, and it's such a great shame, because he had a wonderful legacy. If he had stepped down 10 or so years ago he would be held in very, very high regard."

Tutu said the 84-year-old leader should still be honoured for his leading role in the liberation war against the whites-only regime of Ian Smith in the former Rhodesia.

"And I still want to say we must honour him for the things that he did do, and just say what a shame. We hope he will be able to step down gracefully, with dignity."

Senate results postponed indefinitely

THE announcement of results of elections to the Zimbabwean senate, the largely ceremonial upper house of parliament, have been postponed indefinitely, the electoral commission announced Thursday.

"The results have been delayed because of logistical problems encountered in some areas," deputy chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana said in an announcement on state television.

"The commission is once again appealing to the nation as the verification of senatorial election results is still under way."

The delay to the results for the 60-member senate, which had been expected Thursday, comes after heavy criticism over a hold-up in announcing the outcome to the presidential election, which was also held on Saturday.

The senate has powers to block legislation from the lower house, where President Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF party has lost control for the first time since independence.- AFP
