Katika kamusi ya Expository of new tastment words, yaani kamusi fafanuzi ya maneno ya agano jipya, inasema kuwa msalaba kama alama ya kipagani ilianzia kule Ukaldayo (ambapo pia ndiko chimbuko la Ibrahimu).

Kamusi hii inasema kuwa wapagani wa eneo hili waliitumia alama ya msalaba kama heshima yao kwa muungu wao wa kipagani aliyeitwa Tammuz ambaye kimsingi ni Nimrodi muwindaji na mwanzilishi wa himaya ya Babeli (Babylonian) iliyolaaniwa kuliko hata firauni.

Tammuz kwa ufupi aliitwa «Tau» akitumia alama ya T kama alama yake kuu au sahihi tuseme. Alama hii ya T kama ishara ya Tammuz pia ilitumika si ukaldayo tu bali hata Misri na asia wakati ule ikizingatiwa kuwa Tammuz aliweza kuabudia karibia maeneo hayo yote wakati wa himaya yake. Ezekiel 8:12-16,

Msalaba pia unaweza kupatikana katika jamii za Kimisri za kipagani za hapo mwanzo. Ushahidi huu unapatikana kule kwenye jengo la Amenopolis IV kule Tabes nchini Misri.

Msalaba huu unajulikana maarufu kama « Msalaba wa Misri au Msalaba wa tau.
