JOHN Terry's dad today apologised in court for bringing shame on his son after being told he faces at least six months in jail for supplying cocaine. Ted Terry, 56, handed over three wraps of the class A drug, worth about £120, in the toilet of a wine bar, Basildon Magistrates' Court heard. Unemployed Terry was arrested on November 5 last year. The court heard how an undercover reporter posing as a chauffeur driver convinced him to hand over the drugs, which weighed 3.5g, in the toilets of the Unit 4 wine bar in Chafford Hundred, Essex, just 200 yards from the £250,000 terraced house paid for by his Chelsea and England ace son.
Ricky Khagram, prosecuting, told the court: "Dan Sanderson, an investigative journalist working for The News of the World went to the Unit 4 wine bar in Chafford Hundred on September 17 last year posing as a chauffeur. "Over six weeks he went to the bar and befriended Mr Terry. On November 5 last year he went to the bar with his boss who also posed as a chauffeur driver. "Mr Sanderson was offered cocaine by another male named Leon. During the conversation with the other male. Mr Terry stated to Mr Sanderson he could also supply him with cocaine. "Mr Sanderson agreed to purchase cocaine from Mr Terry and gave him £120. This was for 3g of cocaine, Mr Terry then asked for something more for himself and he was given a further £40. "They went into the toilets of the bar and Mr Terry passed Mr Sanderson three wraps - these contained cocaine.
"This was reported in The News of the World." His barrister, Neil Saunders, said Terry was upset at the embarrassment he had caused his football star son. Mr Saunders said: "He is very remorseful he finds himself in front of you today. He's embarrassed for the upset he has caused to, in particular, his son and that's why he was targeted." Terry, who wore a dark suit, white shirt and blue tie for his court appearance, listened intently in the dock and spoke only to confirm his name, address, date of birth and plead guilty to the single charge of supplying 3.5g of cocaine. Magistrate John Toplis said the case was too serious to be dealt with at magistrates court and sent the matter to Basildon Crown Court for sentencing.
Terry is due to be sentenced on June 1 less than two weeks before England's first game of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
