AfDB inks 400bn/- loan for Msalato Airport
THE African Development Bank (AfDB) has agreed to finance the construction of Msalato International Airport in the capital, Dodoma at a cost of USD 200 million (over 400bn/-), Finance and Planning Minister Dr Philip Mpango has revealed.

A statement released yesterday by the Ministry of Finance and Planning from the bank’s headquarters in Abidjan said AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina had confirmed financing of the project through a concessional loan.
Construction activity for the country’s anticipated fifth international airport is expected to start this year alongside the construction of ring roads in the new capital city, Mpango said. The roads project is also financed by AfDB at a cost of USD 180 million (over 400bn/-) {this will be 8 lanes more than 100 kilometers}
The bank held high-level meetings on Wednesday with its governors and representatives from Tanzania, Burundi, Djibouti, Rwanda, Comoros, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda. {
The statement quoted Dr Mpango who is AfDB governor for Tanzania as saying that the bank agreed to finance the project following a request by President John Magufuli.
“The bank (AfDB) has been of great help to us. There are many other areas of cooperation that it is willing to support,” the minister noted.
Preliminary stages for the project began years ago, including a feasibility study and demarcation of the area at a cost of 715.5million/-, secured as grant from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA).
Speaking in Dodoma mid last year, the Deputy Minister for Works, Transport and Communication Elias Kwandikwa said the ministry was working to assure that people living within the project area are compensated accordingly before construction kicks off.
By mid that time, the government had already compensated 1,432 people living in the area to pave way for the construction of runways and passenger lounges, he said.
Implementation of the project was vital as it will stimulate diverse socio-economic activities in the fast- growing region as well as facilitating government activities, he elaborated.
The AfDB meetings were an opportunity for the bank’s governors to pitch regional needs and highlight country-specific opportunities whereby projects in ICT, education, public finance, energy, transport, water and sanitation sectors featured.
AfDB had approved “transformative” projects valued at USD13.8 billion since 2010, the statement added.
