Tanzania’s government has announced it aims to ratify the terms of a $42 billion LNG facility by October 2025.

According to the country’s Deputy Minister Dr. Doto Biteko, the government is negotiating terms with a consortium comprising energy giants Shell, Equinor and ExxonMobil.

With aims to set the country up as a potential export hub for LNG, Tanzania’s government aims to ensure 3% of natural gas from the LNG project is reserved for domestic utilization while the consortium commits to local content capacity building.

In addition to the development of the LNG facility, Deputy Minster Biteko also highlighted the need for the country to fast-track development of key natural gas blocks to meet rising regional and international demand.

Tanzanian national oil company the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has signed a MoU with energy trading firm Energetech-Tantel to collaborate on the development of natural gas infrastructure and resource distribution.

Under the two-year partnership, the parties will undertake feasibility and engineering studies, obtain regulatory approvals, secure project financing and advance LNG production. TPDC will lead upstream activities while Energetech-Tantel will focus on downstream operations

“This partnership will enable us to deliver scalable energy solutions and fulfill our industrialization agenda. It prioritizes local content development and empowers Tanzanian businesses,” stated Goodluck Shirima; Commissioner-Petroleum and Gas; Ministry of Energy, Tanzania.

The $100 million project aims to achieve first LNG output within 12 months, initially producing 20-30 million standard cubic feet of gas per day with plans to scale up to 100 million standard cubic feet.
