Natural capital constitutes a lot of things actually. Mining is one of them but it also entails other sectors like tourism (huge in Tanzania), the blue economy, and agroforestry.

Agriculture is big in Tanzania, but it’s not heavily advanced. That is many farmers still rely on rainfall for irrigation and we have fewer Agro-processing industries.

What I suggested was an improvement in Human Capital. As you’ve mentioned, some good projects in healthcare and education are underway and it’s good. However, we need better policies to fill in the gaps between our education and labor force skill set. We have more young people. If we provide them with high quality education, vocational training, and jobs to enhance their skill levels, our country will do great.

I strongly suggest enhancing the capacity of our educational institutions to be world class and maybe forming partnerships with other institutions abroad. Our curricula also need changes. We need to focus on areas like capital markets, technology and innovation, Real Estate, Science and Mathematics and many more.

We also need to forego our perceived notions about the arts. In many countries, art is a lucrative industry. From drama and film making to visual arts to music and crafts, we could grow so many talents and create another important sector in our economy. So, teach these things in school.

Lastly, there should be a policy to allow young people, such as high school and secondary school students or even college students, to get jobs or internships during holidays. Companies or other enterprises need to hire young people because it improves their soft skills. Even if the job or internship is not directly related to what they study. It could be as easy as shadowing a nurse or a doctor or becoming a teaching assistant, a server and dishwasher at a restaurant, or a barista! Get young people on their feet and start making them self aware of their potential!
