Top 10 Busiest Airports In Africa (2022)
Africa is a key region with a developing aviation sector, contributing to about 3% of total air traffic. South Africa and Tanzania are represented by four air terminals (two each) in our list of the top ten most active air terminals in Africa.
The percentage of departing and arriving voyagers in 2021 is used to assess the busiest airports.
1. Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport (South Africa)
Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport (South Africa) is a major international airport located in Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa. It serves both domestic and international flights. It is obtained via the Airports Company of South Africa.
Johannesburg International Airport was officially opened in 1952 and was officially known as such until it was changed in 2006 to Oliver Reginald Tambo, the first African president.
In addition, the air terminal serves as the primary air terminal for local and international travellers travelling to and from South Africa.
O. R. Tambo International airport is the most active air terminal in Africa, with 188 scheduled explorer excursions per week and an annual utilitarian limit of 28,000,000 travellers. It is also Africa’s biggest airport.
2. Cairo International Airport, Egypt
Cairo International Airport is Egypt’s most internationally renowned and active air terminal, serving both domestic and international passengers and cargo.
It has been shown by the website Flightsfrom.com that the air terminal handles around 111 explorer flights every day and has an annual usable limit of 15 million travellers to approximately 84 destinations all over the world.
The Cairo International Airport is operated by Cairo Airport Company and is located in Heliopolis, which is about 15 kilometers from the city’s commercial district in the upper east of the city.
After the O.R. Tambo International Airport, it is the second busiest air terminal in Africa in terms of passenger traffic.
3. Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa
Ethiopian Airports Enterprise, based in Addis Ababa, was in charge of the project. Bole International Airport is a world-class international airport in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
It is located in the Bole region, which is southeast of the midtown area.
According to official records, the airport was officially named the Hails Selassie global air terminal.
With two terminals and a 37-kilometer area, it serves as the primary landing strip for Ethiopian aeroplanes, which fly to and from destinations all over Ethiopia and the African continent, as well as to and from Asia, Europe, North America, and South America regularly.
Bole International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Africa, because of the regularly scheduled explorer trips of 100 passengers every hour.
4. Cape Town International Airport, South Africa
Cape Town International Airport is the primary international airport servicing the city of Cape Town. It is the second busiest air terminal in South Africa and the fourth busiest air terminal in Africa, with 82 scheduled voyager excursions.
It is the only air station in the Cape Town Metropolitan area that provides pre-arranged exploration groups, making it the most important. It is also Africa’s best airport currently.
5. Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Nigeria
This air station was built during World War II and was named after Murtala Muhammed, a Nigerian military dictator who reigned during the time of the war.
Nigeria’s Ikeja International Airport is a massive aviation terminal that serves the whole state of Lagos and is located in the city of Ikeja.
The air terminal traffic has been growing steadily in recent years, with more than 6,500,000 passengers passing through it as a result of the continuous improvements made within the air terminal.
With a total of 78 scheduled explorer excursions, it is the sixth busiest airport in Nigeria.
6. Mohammed V International Airport, Casablanca
Mohammed V International Airport is a multi-purpose airport serving the Moroccan capital of Casablanca.
The airport is located in the Nouaceur area and is operated by the ONDA (National Airports Office), with about 10.3 million passengers passing through the terminal in 2019.
The airport has a total of 76 scheduled voyager trips, making it the sixth most active air terminal on the continent of Africa.
It was constructed by the United States in 1943 amid World War II, and it has consistently maintained a stellar reputation as one of the finest and most famous structures in the world since its establishment. ONDA is in charge of the project.
7. Dar Es Salaam (DAR), Tanzania
Dar Es Salaam International Airport (DAR) is the busiest aviation terminal in Tanzania, United Republic Tanzania.
You have the option of going to 32 different destinations with 26 transporters in scheduled voyager traffic.
It is also the busiest air terminal in Tanzania and the seventh busiest overall on the African continent, with a scheduled voyager trip of 71 passengers constantly.
8. Zanzibar (ZNZ), Tanzania
The Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) is the second busiest aviation terminal in Tanzania. With 20 flights in scheduled exploration traffic, you may go as far as 20 different destinations away.
It is also the second most active airport in Tanzania and the eighth-most active in Africa, with a booked explorer expedition of 64 passengers per day on average.
9. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV), Abuja
The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV) is Nigeria’s second busiest airport, behind Lagos International Airport. When you have scheduled explorer traffic, you may travel to 32 destinations.
The air terminal has a total of 59 scheduled voyager excursions, which places it as the ninth busiest air terminal in Africa and the second busiest air terminal in Nigeria.
10. Tunis Carthage Airport
Tunis Carthage Airport Is a major international airport in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital and largest city, and serves as the nation’s primary gateway.
The airport was formerly known as Embakasi Airport, but the name was changed in 1978 to honor Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s first president, and a leader in the country’s development and modernization.
