Nigerian Vice President Osibanjo Launches African Court’s Judicial Year in Arusha

The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osibanjo joins Tanzanian Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa in gracing the inaugural opening for the Judicial Year of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Arusha.

Also known as the Court, the Pan-African Legal Institution holds the solemn ceremony to mark the Judicial Year launch at its Premises in Majengo area, along Dodoma Road, adjacent to the Tanzania National Parks’ headquarters on Monday, the 28th of February 2022.

An official statement from the ACHPR Communications officer, Sukhdev Chhatbar, confirms the presence of the high ranking government officials from Nigeria and Tanzania.

The ceremony, whose theme is ‘The African Court and the Africa we want’, takes place at the premises of the Court in Arusha, and will be marked by speeches from the Nigerian Vice President, the Tanzanian Premier as well as human rights stakeholders from across the continent and beyond.

The guest of honour and keynote speaker at the ceremony is Prof Yemi Oluleke Osibanjo, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who also happens to be a lawyer by profession.

The Ceremony is being attended by representatives of Member States, Regional and Sub-Regional Courts and African Union organs with a human rights mandate.

Also in attendance are the African Union Ambassadors accredited to Tanzania, members of the judicial corps of Tanzania, representatives of Bar Associations, civil society organisations, members of the academia and other stakeholders involved in the work of the Court and the protection of human rights on the continent.

The Ceremony kicks off this Monday at 10:30 am East African Time (EAT), will be following a hybrid model, and will be live-streamed, to allow all Africans the opportunity to witness this auspicious and solemn event of Africa’s apex Court.

Operating from Arusha, Tanzania the African Court is composed of eleven Judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity. The Court meets four times a year in Ordinary Sessions and may hold Extra-Ordinary Sessions.
