Govt to form probe team on cost of Arusha Airport expansion work
WORKS and Transport minister Prof Makame Mbarawa has said he will form a probe team to satisfy himself on the cost of the expansion work in progress at Arusha Airport.
He said this here at the weekend after an inspection tour of infrastructure at the facility, including the apron, runway and vehicle parking lots.
“I have inspected the work going on, but I will send in a team to find out whether the costs you have told me are involved are commensurate with the actual work done,” he noted.
The minister called on workers at the airport to appreciate the importance of the services they render to tourists and other people making use of the facility “in order to attract more people and, thus, realise an increase in much-needed revenues”.
He said the airport comes third in Tanzania after Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport and Mwanza Airport in terms of revenue generation and the second after JNIA with regard to the frequency and number of flights as well as the number of passenger arrivals and departures, adding: “This is precisely why the government is looking at it very closely”.
According to the airport’s manager, Reston Mtafya, all workers at the facility are “well set with respect to ethical conduct, discipline and innovativeness in fulfilling their duties, with a view to ensuring this result in enhanced productivity and income generation as well as customer satisfaction.”
Prof Mbarawa also inspected a workshop in Arusha run by the Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics Services Agency (TEMESA), calling on the management team to submit to him monthly reports on the volume of work done.
He also demanded that the management make it common procedure to ensure that complaints from customers with regard to the services rendered are dealt with promptly, conclusively and to satisfaction.
“You must submit to me monthly reports showing the amount of money collected and the volume of the services rendered in order for us (ministry) to judge your performance. Anyone failing to perform as required should give way to others,” he added.
