WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says releasing photos of Osama bin Laden's body could pose a national security risk to the United States.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama has seen the photographs U.S. forces took of bin Laden after they shot and killed the al-Qaida leader. Administration officials discussed whether to release the images, but the president ultimately decided he did not want to make available graphic photos that could become a propaganda tool.

Carney says the president believes the DNA and facial analysis proves the man U.S. forces shot was bin Laden, and the photos are not needed as further proof. Obama made his comments in a CBS News interview.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
President Barack Obama has decided against releasing death photos of Osama bin Laden amid concerns that gruesome images could prove inflammatory, even though they could have provided tangible proof of the terrorist mastermind's demise.

Obama revealed his decision in an interview taped for CBS' "60 Minutes," just a day after his CIA director, Leon Panetta, said the photos would be released.

The president decided against making the images public after a spirited debate within government over the potential impact of their release.
Ever since word of bin Laden's death broke, the administration has tried to strike a balance between celebrating the success of the dramatic covert operation without unnecessarily offending sensitivities in the Muslim world. Officials stressed that Muslim traditions were followed before bin Laden's body was buried at sea, for example.

There was support for releasing the photos from both ends of the spectrum: Some family members of those who died in the 9-11 terror attacks thought it important to document bin Laden's death, as did some skeptics in the Arab world who doubted his demise in the absence of convincing evidence.

But the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said in advance of Obama's decision that he was concerned that the photographic images could be seen as a "trophy" that would inflame U.S. critics and makes it harder for members of the American military deployed overseas to do their job.

Rogers said the picture could stir up anti-U.S. fervor around the world and hamper intelligence cooperation with the United States. He said conspiracy theorists wouldn't have likely been convinced anyhow.

The photos have been described by several sources as gruesome. One shows part of the skull blown off, those sources say.
A U.S. official said one consideration is that the photo also shows exposed brain matter.

Sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the photo is still part of a classified investigation.
The president made his decision as the Navy SEALS involved in the daring raid in Pakistan arrived in the U.S. for debriefing, and U.S. officials began to comb through the intelligence trove of computer files, flash drives, DVDs and documents that the commandos hauled out of the terrorist's hideaway.

Bin Laden had about 500 euros sewn into his clothes when he was killed and had phone numbers on him when he was killed, U.S. officials said, a possible indication that bin Laden was ready to flee the compound on short notice.

Obama prepared to visit New York City on Thursday to lay a wreath at Ground Zero and visit with 9/11 families and first responders.

Osama Bin Laden's body was buried at sea to deny his followers a shrine, it has been widely reported. But why do the graves of leaders matter so much?
For a man who had been the world's most wanted, it was a deeply undistinguished final resting place.
The remains of Osama Bin Laden met an inauspicious fate - his body dropped into the ocean from an American aircraft carrier.

But the purpose of his burial at sea was clear - to ensure that there was no grave to become a shrine for supporters, and a recruiting tool for extremist Islamism.

It's a motive with clear historical antecedents. Victorious regimes, particularly when confronted with ideological movements with charismatic leaders, have often been anxious to deny their defeated enemies a rallying point, a place where sympathisers can gather to venerate their dead.

The Berghof, the dictator's home in the Bavarian alps, was demolished in the early 1950s by the West German government, who feared it would become a focal point for neo-Nazis. Other Nazi leaders executed at the Nuremberg trials by the Allies were cremated and their ashes were scattered in the Conwentzbach river to frustrate any attempt to by latter-day sympathisers to commemorate them.

Hitler's mountain chalet was destroyed to prevent it becoming a shrine
At the other end of the political spectrum, the body of revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara was photographed perfunctorily by the enemies who killed him in Bolivia before his burial in an unmarked grave - his opponents perhaps anticipating the cult he would inspire.

The fate of Bin Laden echoes the British empire's approach to an earlier Muslim insurgent - Muhammad Ahmad, known as the Mahdi, whose tomb in Sudan was destroyed to prevent it becoming a rallying point for supporters.

The Mahdi enjoyed military successes against the British - including the slaughter of the garrison in Khartoum - before dying of typhus. His followers were crushed by the British, his tomb destroyed and his bones thrown in the river

Italian leader Benito Mussolini's corpse was, variously, hung from meat hooks by victorious partisans, buried in an unmarked grave, dug up by loyal fascists, re-captured by the authorities and finally re-interred in a crypt in the years following his death.

Likewise, the Valley of the Fallen near the Spanish capital Madrid, which houses the tomb of dictator Francisco Franco and was partly built by Republican prisoners, divides many Spaniards along civil war lines to this day.

For this reason, believes historian Laurence Rees, author of The Nazis: A Warning from History, any political leader's shrine is intended to provide some kind of immortality.

Of course, the very lack of a permanent memorial or, indeed, a corpse, meant conspiracy theories about Bin Laden's fate flourished almost as soon as his death was announced.

Indeed, nothing reveals the power of shrines more than the battles which are fought over them after their inhabitants have died.

Photos of Osama bin Laden's wife Amal Ahmed Abdel Fatteh are seen in photographs from Pakistani news outlet GEO

Osama Bin Laden's wife, who was in the late Al-Qaeda leader's compound in northern Pakistan on Sunday when U.S. military personnel made a raid and killed him, has been identified.

Pakistani news outlet Geo has released a passport photo of Amal Ahmed Abdel Fatteh. ABC news also reported on the woman, writing her name "Amal Ahmed Abdul Fatah." The UK's Telegraph reports her name as being "Amal Ahmend al Sadah."

All three sources have used GEO's passport snapshot. Initially, photos posted online in some report had her eyes and nose partially blacked out.

The White House placed bin Laden's wife in the same room with her husband as troops entered the room.

"In the room with bin Laden was bin Laden's wife. She rushed one of the U.S. assaulters and was shot in the leg but not killed," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Wednesday.

Carney said both bin Laden and his wife were unarmed.

That version of events is corrected from a previous version given by John Brennan Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism.

Initially, John Brennan, Obama's assistant for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, said the woman in bin Laden's room "was positioned in a way that indicated that she was being used as a shield."

However on Tuesday Carney would not make a definitive statement about her being used as a shield or not.

"Whether or not she was being used as a shield or trying to use herself as a shield or simply caught in crossfire is unclear. And we're working on getting the details that we can," he said.

Lakini kwa namna moja au nyingine waliona bora watupe mwili baharini ili samaki nao waambulie minofu ya shekhe osama.
