Jurgen Klopp believes his title-chasing Liverpool side have yet to perform to their full potential.
The unbeaten Reds go into Saturday's clash with Arsenal at Anfield on the back of eight straight league wins which have helped establish a six-point lead at the summit.
However, Klopp insists there is still plenty of room for improvement as they look to maintain momentum going into the new year. The manager was less than impressed with
elements of the 4-0 rout of Newcastle on Boxing Day.
“There were a lot of really good parts so far but was there a game where I thought: ‘It's not possible that we can be better?' No,” Klopp said.
“It was not there yet. We have to improve in pretty much everything.
“First half against Newcastle, the start of the game was not good. It was just not good.
“Offensively we looked so confident, bam, bam, bam, small passes in small areas, got in the area but didn’t score which can happen.
“Defensively there was misunderstanding, wrong positioning, stuff like that. Against another opponent you would have struggled. There is a lot to come from the boys but so far the steps are really okay.”
Earlier in the season Klopp admitted that tightening Liverpool up defensively had come at the expense of their fluency going forward.
However, in recent weeks they have looked a lot more potent. They have won their past five league matches by a combined score of 16-2.
“People were asking: ‘It’s good, you don’t concede, but where is the free-flowing football?’,” Klopp added.
“I sit here and think it is like a kid getting a nice present for Christmas and then asking: ‘Where is the other one?’ You always want something else or a bit more.
“We had to develop. It’s not a new style, but we had to step a bit aside to start again. We cannot only build on the next level.
“How many goals did we score last season? A lot. But now we say we need to score 15 more to be successful because we concede so many.
“It was clear that we needed to work on stability and consistency and to do that you work on defending. That’s how it is. We did.”
So far Liverpool have made light of injuries of centre-backs Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. Dejan Lovren has come into the side and impressed alongside Virgil van Dijk.
James Milner (hamstring) remains sidelined but Klopp has the opportunity to freshen up his midfield against the Gunners with Fabinho and Naby Keita both eyeing a recall.
The fact that Klopp believes the Reds can raise the bar even higher must be a huge positive for the manager as they embark on the second half of the season.
“It is,” Klopp said. “Listen, I loved the PSG game, I loved the Napoli game and I loved so many games that we played. They were, even in my eyes, strong opponents and we went for them.
“It is wonderful for these kind of games. You cannot play like this for 70% of the teams in world football but against these two teams you can.
“Against Chelsea, what a game! Both sides, wow, brilliant. The Man City game was brilliant but completely different to all the other games we played against them before.

“We adapted to that. We didn’t give anything away. City were ready to kill us on the counter attack but we didn’t give anything away.
“Yes, we did get lucky with the penalty of course but it was not a City game where they had five or six chances in a minute.”
Saturday marks the final instalment of a thrilling 2018 for the Reds. They reached the final of the Champions League last term before embarking on a record-breaking start to the Premier League season and progressing in Europe once again.
Klopp said: "My final thoughts on 2018 I'll keep until after the Arsenal game! But so far it's been a year with a lot of highs and a few hard, hard lows.
"It's been a better year for Liverpool for sure. I don't know how many points we got in the second half of last season but at that time we had to fight with all we had for the Champions League spot because Chelsea were chasing us like crazy.
"Going to the Champions League final was a brilliant ride. We enjoyed all those exciting knockout games. Of course we had the massive low in Kiev which was hard to take.
"The first part of this season was better than we expected points wise, that's clear, you cannot plan to get 51 points in late December, it's not possible. The development of the team was very positive of course."

Lovren ahead of VVD ? 😀
Mina ahead of Robertson ? 😀

Even Mwinyi Zahera wouldn't do it 😀

Tomorrow we'll see Alex Iwobi ahead of Mo Salah! Trust me 😀
Mo Salah hata vyombo vya habari vinauza kwa ajili yake, ana kismati, hawezi kuachwa hata ikitokea ameboronga,

Who is starting on a bench today kwenye midfield?

Najua Fabinho is a starter today, Henderson as well kwa sababu ya U-Captain (but I wish aanzie benchi), Gini (had a good rest between the week, so unaona kama anaanza.

Keita anaweza kubaki benchi leo, labda kocha ajilipue kumweka Henderson nje.
