Jurgen Klopp must secure silverware if Liverpool want to keep hold of Mohamed Salah
Kop legends Roy Evans and Steve McMahon give their verdict on the Reds' season of progress:

Jurgen Klopp must deliver trophies if Liverpool are going to retain their top talent like 36-goal top scorer Mohamed Salah.
Kop legends Roy Evans and Steve McMahon are big admirers of the progress Klopp has overseen at Anfield over the past two-and-a-half years.
However, they insist that Liverpool’s thrilling brand of attacking football will count for little unless they start collecting silverware.
Former Reds boss Roy Evans, who served the club with distinction for 35 years, and ex-midfielder Steve McMahon, who was part of three title-winning teams, have gone into business together to launch Bootroom Academies.

I like
Jurgen’s attitude and his whole approach to the job. It looks like he’s on board with his players. I love the way he plays. I’m a great believer in attacking football - it was the way my Liverpool team played. They seem to play with a smile on their faces and it’s great to watch.
The only thing is that you have to be successful - you have to start winning trophies. That’s the pressure of being the manager of Liverpool. The expectation is massive.
There are a few things I disagree with him on. I’m not one for rotation but he sees what goes on every day while I’m just a fan now with an opinion.
I think most Liverpool fans have enjoyed his time as manager so far and I just hope he can keep taking us forward and get that first trophy in his pocket.
I think for some of the foreign coaches the
Champions League is the be-all and end-all. I’d always put the Premier League first. If we had been able to win that during my time I would have been absolutely delighted with that. That’s what we aimed for.
Forget all the stats about possession, it’s about what you win.
Over the years Liverpool - from Bill Shankly’s time to the current day - we’ve considered ourselves a top club. For us not to have won the Premier League is a bit scary really.
Before it was United as a thorn in our side, now it’s Man City. Going back to my time, Alex Ferguson’s team were winning more trophies than us and that hurt. Man City have put themselves in a very strong position but I don’t think we’re far away.
We need to keep the manager, keep our best players and keep investing in talent. Naby Keita is coming this summer and I’m sure there will be a couple more. You need to keep improving the squad. Some managers spend money for the sake of it but if it doesn’t improve what you’ve already got then you are wasting it.
Keeping Salah & co at Anfield? That’s another reason why we have to win trophies - to keep the likes of Salah. We were always a club that bought the best players, we didn’t sell our best players.
Of course the game changes. Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG are the teams now who most players want to go and play for if they get the chance. But it looks like he’s enjoying his football at Liverpool.
Steve McMahon:
I don’t think fourth this season would be regarded as success. Liverpool have moved on. I’d hate to think that Liverpool are a replica of Arsenal where the remit is just to qualify for the Champions League. It’s not.
Yeah, Champions League is important in terms of the money but for a player, on your CV you don’t put ‘we qualified for the Champions League every year for six years’ on it. You want to put down FA Cups and league titles.
Qualifying for the Champions League should be the prerequisite for Liverpool Football Club, it shouldn’t be an achievement. What Liverpool need to do now is turn it into trophies.
Playing devil’s advocate, Liverpool could finish third or fourth and that’s Champions League qualification. Manchester United have been horrendous this season, Jose Mourinho’s side have been boring and absolutely awful to watch.
If I was a neutral I wouldn’t pay to watch Manchester United play. I’d pay to watch Liverpool because they are a joy to watch almost every week. But United might win the FA Cup and come second in the Premier League, if they do that then who’s the better team? Liverpool have been the most enjoyable team to watch bar Man City.
Keeping Salah & co at Anfield?
I hope Salah's head doesn’t get turned. Hopefully he tells his agent ‘don’t even think about it, I’m staying here’.
But if you are not successful it’s an excuse for a Salah, a Mane or a Firmino to say ‘actually, I want to win trophies’. Sometimes it’s not about being greedy, it’s about trophies. If Liverpool aren’t doing that it gives them a reason to say ‘actually, I want some medals to show the grandkids’.
