Not tourist accommodating place.
I am Tanzanian who have lived in Dar and also been in western countries. I have been to this market many times to even count. This is local market which is frequented by most local people. This can be very annoying place for a westerner. It is chaotic, overwhelming, hot, muddy, dusty, smelly you name it.It is full of life but also full of bargains. It is very hard to navigate this place if you are not accompanied with a local person who knows this area very well. Avoid vipanya(public buses) and give yourself a huge favor and take a cab.Wear sensible shoes(sneakers or resilient ballet flats), wear light and comfortable clothes, leave all jewelries and electronics at home/hotel.Eat and carry a lot of water before you come to this place as you will need energy to walk around here.Bargain,Bargain Bargain.I will not spend the whole day here though as Dar has more things to see.
