The Aworis: story about a family of firsts…
The name Awori crosses the Kenyan border and spills into Uganda – courtesy of the 19th century partition of Africa by the Europeans.
But the Aworis claim to fame is more than just the fact that they live on both sides of the border.
They are a family of ‘firsts’ – from politicians, doctors, bankers and engineers to administrators.
Children of an Anglican clergyman called Canon Jeremiah Awori, they have dominated the Kenyan and Ugandan scene for nearly a century — and they are not about to fade away.
The canon and his wife Maria had 18 children in all, 17 of whom grew to adulthood while the first born died at the age of seven from a snake bite.
The canon’s father, Wasia, had a younger brother whose land fell on the Ugandan side during partitioning.
This parcel was inherited by Aggrey Awori, the 12th child and Peres, the second born who went to Uganda where both became citizens after independence.
Aggrey is a politician who in 2001 was among five presidential candidates who unsuccessfully campaigned against Yoweri Museveni.
A sprinter, he represented Uganda at the 1960 Commonwealth Games running in the 200 metres.
The former MP for Samia Bugwe North rose to become Minister for Information and Technology in the Museveni government.
He is currently doing business in Kampala and is one of those who calls the shots in the country’s politics.
In Kenya, the family torch was carried by the pre-independence freedom fighter Wycliffe Works Wasia Awori, the second born.
Fiery and articulate, WWW as he was known became a member of the Legislative Council, the precursor to the present Parliament.
From there, he joined a group of African politicians including the mercurial Tom Mboya to agitate for Independence through the slogan: Uhuru Now and Not Tomorrow!
Family members went on to enter nearly every field of endeavour to become the Who’s Who of Kenya.
With WWW’s death shortly after Independence, Joshua Awori, the fourth born, became the eldest surviving son.
He became the personnel director at Caltex Oil from where he retired and now lives a quiet life in Nairobi and at their rural home in Busia.
The late Prof Nelson Awori, a kidney specialist who died in 1986, became the first African doctor to perform the organ transplant at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Another Awori, Mrs Mary Okello, became the first African woman manager in Barclays Bank and went on to establish the famous Makini schools.
The late Hannington Awori, an engineer, began his career at the Unilever Group before chairing boards of blue chip companies including Nation Media Group and Standard Chartered Bank.
Ernest Awori is also an engineer and leads a quiet life in Busia. The Awori daughters also married into prominent families.
Mrs Rodah Ouya, became the wife of Dr John Ouya, one of Kenya’s first physicians, while Mrs Margaret Openda’s husband David Openda was among the earliest educationists at the Kenya Institute of Education.
Mrs Grace Wakhungu, a former general manager at Kenya Reinsurance married another leading medic from Bungoma.
Christine Khayanyanga, a lawyer, married Mr Justice (Rtd) Andrew Khayanga.
Of the last two sons, Henry Awori runs businesses in Uganda while Willis Awori works with the International Centre of Insect Physiology – ICIPE.
And with children and grandchildren, the Aworis are a family whose branches will spread through this century and beyond.
