Nairobi. Tanzania has on Wednesday, April 19, sent a delegation from the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) to visit the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on a benchmarking exercise of the Sh1.76 trillion (Ksh88 billion) Nairobi Expressway, Kenyan media has reported.
In a statement by KeNHA, the delegation sought to find out ways of implementing private-public partnership projects.
In particular, the team was impressed with the expressway's construction and operations and pursued means of implementing such a project in their country.

"The team later visited the Nairobi Expressway and learnt about its construction and operations for possible implementation
A delegation from the Tanzania National Roads Agency visited the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) office on April 19, 2023.
"The iconic Nairobi Expressway is the lates road infrastructure project in Kenya which provides viable transportation solutions and has decongested the city among other urban areas," the statement read in part.
This comes two days after Tanzania reportedly sent another delegation from the National Defence College (NDC) to learn about Kenya's multi-agency approach to security management.
The team was received by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo who took them through the exercise.
"Led by Brig. General Rutambuka, the delegation paid a courtesy call on (Interior) PS Omollo who took them through Kenya's multi-agency approach to security management, which has been crucial in tailoring proactive responses to various security threats, including crime and terrorism," the statement read in part.
The expressway was built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for a total cost of Ksh88 billion.
Through the model, the Chinese company will be in charge of the road for 27 years to recoup its money before transferring it to the government. This means that the company will only be setting aside a fraction of the money earned for the operation and maintenance of the road.
The elevated road was a litmus test for the government to test the PPP model for funding capital-intensive projects.

Kenya is set to upgrade sections of the road that connects the country to South Sudan as it further opens up northern Kenya.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said it plans to construct two segments of the road between Eldoret and Juba in South Sudan with a length of nearly 200 kilometres (Km).
The road has in the past been in a dilapidated state and also prone to banditry attacks that have seen many transporters moving cargo to and from Juba opt to use a longer route through Uganda.
