Mkichinjana mwaka huu dunia itawapuuza Kama Somalia.

Kenya banks on Naivasha hub to control regional transit cargo trade

Kenya puts in place infrastructure for regional cargo trade

In Summary
•State has lowered cost of shipping containers from 2000 USD to 860 USD as well as cut out the bureaucratic tapes to woo neighbouring countries.

Kenys is set to become the main cargo handling hub in the region, Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga said on Monday.
It has already revamped and linked the old meter gauge railway line to the SGR to cut the clearing tariffs and reduce bureaucracies in order to attract traders from neighbouring countries.
Mainga on Monday took journalists on a conducted tour of the Naivasha-based dry port to witness the transshipment of import containers moved from the port of Mombasa to the Inland Container Deport using SGR onto a meter gauge line for onward rail transportation to Malaba.

KRA, Kenya Ports of Authority and the Kenya Bureau of Standards are now operating under one roof to ease transhipment.
Charges for clearing and shipping a 20 foot container using the railway line will cost 860 US dollars down from 2000 US dollars currently charged on road shipment.
Further, cargo clearing from Mombasa to Malaba will take 28 hours from 7 days as is currently the case, Mainga said.
The corporation plans to install an automated transshipment machinery at the ICD so that the containers can be moved from SGR to MGR train in less than 30 minutes. This should be ready by end of March.
The MD said the revamping of the 465km of old meter gauge railway rehabilitated from Longonot to Malaba is a game changer.
“The government is out to ensure movement of cargo through rail system is efficient, reliable, safe and that is why the rehabilitation of the 465km is a landmark for us,”he said.
He said the state has engaged Uganda to work on its lines and link it with the Kenyan one at Malaba border point all the way to Kampala to ensure seamless shipping of cargo from Mombasa to Kampala.

“We have also struck a deal with South Sudan to ensure that they pick their cargo at the Naivasha dry port to save them costs and cut out time spent in the process,” he said.

Seventy two percent of land available for investment in Phase I of Konza Technopolis has been taken up by investors.
This represents 106 out of 147 land parcels demarcated for uptake by investors in the first phase, which comprises of 1,703 acres of land including wildlife and nature parks.

Development of horizontal infrastructure is set to be completed by the end of 2022.

The completion of the works, which entail the construction of streetscapes and drainage works, paves way for the vertical construction works to be undertaken by the private sector.
According to the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) chief executive John Tanui, the authority is now focusing to complete the horizontal infrastructure that entails servicing the land parcels with key amenities.
“For the horizontal infrastructure, we expect within this year to move and reach over 95 per cent," Tanui said.
The remaining scope of work includes the development of verticals among them a police command centre, fire station, welcome centre, safety shelter for screening vehicles and power distribution station as well as Konza furnished apartments.
"In 2021, we recorded over 70 percent completion and our focus is to complete this as we accelerate investor’s uptake,” Tanui said during an investor’s tour of the facility on Monday.
KoTDA expects the entire land parcels available to be taken up by June.
It is in discussion with the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning to have more land demarcated for manufacturing owing to high demand.

All the parcels which had been set aside for manufacturing have been taken up, Tanui said.
Phase One of the project is designed as a mixed-use community, comprising of commercial, residential, public, and hospitality amenities.
Upon completion, it is expected to attract 30,000 residents, 7,500 knowledge workers and 16,700 other workers.
As part of its strategic priorities under the second strategic plan (2021-2025), KoTDA is actively engaging both local and international investors.
Private sector players are also embracing the Konza National Data Centre, which is offering cloud computing services to both private and public organisations.

Malindi Airport expansion to start as Sh5bn allocated

The planned expansion of Malindi International Airport is set to start after the State allocated Sh5 billion for the project. This comes as a big boost for tourism, especially in the North Coast, which has remained in the doldrums for a while now.

The project has stalled for 18 years due to compensation wrangles between landowners and government affecting the tourism haven frequented by international tourists, especially Italians.

The National Development Implementation Technical Committee (NDITC) said the project is ready to take off after the government set aside funds to compensate the landowners who will be affected by the project.

“A lot of tourists coming from Europe would like to have their planes landing here but the kind of aircraft that come in with tourists from those countries usually require a long span of runaway. The current runaway is about 1.4km but for larger planes to land here requires an additional 2km,” said Susan Mochache, who is an official at NDITC.

North Coast tourism sector suffered a major slump due to the pandemic after the international market was affected.

Ms Mochache who is also the Health principal secretary said the expansion of the runway will allow larger planes and cargo flights to land in Malindi to boost tourism and business in general.

“We can thereafter adequately land the kind of aircraft that will bring in the number of tourists we are looking at and the size of cargo aircraft that would like to land here but are limited by runway,” she added.

The Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers official, Dr Sam Ikwaye said the airport upgrade will ease accessibility of the region by tourists.

“Accessibility is an important factor in the revival of tourism in North Coast. But we have been having a challenge in Malindi as tourists are forced to land in Mombasa before connecting to Malindi which has been cumbersome due to traffic snarl-up,” Dr. Ikwaye said.

The direct flights landing in Malindi, he noted will serve the environs and further increase the value of investments and properties as prices will go up.

“Auxiliary services like agriculture and other utilities that depend on a functioning airport will be attracted to the area. The area has an extensive agricultural sector which will boost cargo business at the airport,” said Dr Ikwaye.

Ms Mochahe cited land acquisition as the biggest challenge in airport expansion plan.

“There is land that we need to acquire for Kenya Airport Authority. We have managed to acquire some part of it where this terminal is built and compensation was given to the landowners. But we now have a budget of Sh5 billion to expand the runaway,” she said.

The government, Ms Mochache said, will fast-track access to the money so that the compensation can be undertaken and the land acquired.
However, the PS warned the landowners against developing their lands.
“I urge the people to limit development. They know there is an intention by the government to develop that land and there’s no point of developing it yet we are now almost at the point where we are almost confident that compensation will be done,” she added.

Ms Mochache said expansion and development of the airport are crucial to meet the demand of tourists who want to visit the area.

The airport manager Mohammed Karama urged the state to speed up the compensation to kick-start the project.

“Our consultant has already conducted environmental impact assessment and further came up with reallocation action plan which was forwarded and approved by the National Environmental Management Authority to start the project,” said he said.

He said the more they delay, the more the project’s value will increase.

“We don’t encourage any development to be continued in the area, kindly halt them to give us an easy time,” he added.

The national government has in the last ten years injected Sh144 billion in the construction of 2,200km of roads at the Coast geared towards boosting trade between Kenya and Tanzania.

The finances have been used to build and improve roads in Mombasa, Lamu, Kilifi, Tana River, Taita Taveta and Kwale counties, enhancing trade in the region.

Transport Cabinet secretary James Macharia who inspected preliminary construction works for the 40km-long Mtwapa- Kwa Kadzengo-Kilifi road project, said the network will improve transport between Kenya and Tanzania by reducing travel time, vehicle operating cost, decreasing traffic congestion, and improving safety in the urban sections along the project road.

“This is the first phase of the Bagamoyo (in Tanzania)-Horohoro/Lunga-Lunga-Malindi Road Project that aims to stimulate regional integration by reducing travel time, facilitating trade and the movement of people across borders. The development of this road corridor is planned in phases owing to the size (454 km),” he said.

The government is dualling the road, as well as the Nyali bridge-Mtwapa road section, to ease congestion on the Mombasa-Malindi highway, added the CS.

The Mtwapa-Kwa Kadzengo-Kilifi road project is part of the Bagamoyo (in Tanzania)-Lunga Lunga-Mombasa-Malindi road project that is being implemented in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), African Development Fund (AFD), and the European Union (EU).

Phase I of the project comprised 120.8km Mkange-Tungumaa-Pangani road section in Tanzania and 54km Mombasa-Mtwapa-Kilifi road section in Kenya.

“It also includes access road consultancy services and other social complementary. The project will boost regional integration through the reduction in transit times, enhanced trade and cross-border movement of people, opening up access to tourist attractions,” Mr Macharia said.
