President of Tanzania Samia Suluhu Hassan inaugurated on Monday Elsewedy Industrial Complex of Elsewedy Electric East Africa LTD in Tanzania, establishing a new regional manufacturing and export hub for wires, cables, transformers, metres, and insulators in a new milestone for the cooperation between Egypt and Tanzania.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior government officials from both Egypt and Tanzania. From the Egyptian side, the investment delegation was spearheaded by Asem El-Gazzar, Egypt’s Minister of Housing and Urban Utilities, the Ambassador of Egypt in Tanzania, Mohamed Jaber Abu El Wafaa, and the CEO of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), Mohamed Abdelwahab, as well as 50 Egyptian businessmen and investors.

Elsewedy Electric President and CEO Ahmed El Sewedy said: “Elsewedy Electric has embarked on a mission to expand in Africa 20 years ago. Over this time, Tanzania has remained one important priority in our strategy, which materialized in 2018. Tanzania’s favourable investment climate and its government’s support to industries enable Elsewedy Electric to use the new complex as a manufacturing and export hub at the heart of east and south Africa.

Tanzania is suitably located bordering eight countries, six of which are nearly or completely land-locked, which makes Tanzania well-positioned to become a regional economic and transit hub.”

Built on 120,100 square metres with investments of $35m, the complex comprises several manufacturing facilities, from cables & wires, transformers, through PVC, and meters, to a logistic center built on a 4,800 sqm area. The complex will produce the solutions and equipment necessary for the industrialization strategy of Tanzania 2025 and will create over 500 jobs for talented youth and technical engineers in the first phase alone, which includes the wires and cables factory.

In addition, the complex includes a technical training academy to provide innovative technical education and vocational training programs with international standards to skill and train aspiring employees and feed the growing labour market in the developing nation.

On the same remarkable day, President Suluhu Hassan also laid the foundation stone of the Egyptian Industrial City (EIC) in the Kigamboni district of Dar es Salaam.

The 2.2m sqm industrial park is expected to accommodate labour-intensive industries, including chemical, engineering and mining industries. Developed by Elsewedy Electric’s subsidiary, Elsewedy Industrial Development, the park is aimed to attract over $400m worth of investments from over 100 investors across the region, which would create more than 50,000 jobs and support Tanzania’s industrialization strategy 2025.

One thing I love about Tanzania is that we never brag of small small achievements like some poor neighbors up north.
A reason they are always shocked of what they see during their first visits in Dar
We are silent achievers. More shocks to come

This whole thread is about you bragging about your tiny achievements bro. Are you comfortable lying to yourself like that?🤣🤣

Alafu heri sisi we both brag and criticize ourselves in the same measure, you rarely find a Tanzanian criticizing Tanzania and the few that do are considered outcasts even here on this forum. No wonder you think your thieving politicians are gods.🤣🤣

Kenya Power on Friday revealed plans for a larger stake of the electric car market through building countrywide charging points and push for further lowering of import taxes for non-fuel driven cars.

The electricity distributor said it would build a network of public electric vehicle charging points, targeting one of the hurdles for use of electric cars in Kenya.

It is also in talks with the State to cut taxes on electric cars and equipment for building charging points to meet the State target of having at least five percent of registered cars being non-petrol.

The utility is looking at the electricity charging points as new revenue streams in its race to diversify from selling power to homes and businesses.

“We are also planning to set up charging facilities across the country, and will make use of our existing workshops to provide after-sale services such as mechanical support,” Kenya Power acting CEO Rosemary Oduor told shareholders at the firm’s AGM.

"As Kenya’s only electricity off-taker, and with our goal being to become the energy solutions provider of choice, the opportunity presented by electric motorisation is substantive enough to be a dial-mover for the business."

The big worry for most people thinking about buying an electric car is how to charge the vehicles.

Kenya Power is expected to set the electric car charging points along major highways, parking lots and malls with its workshops being hubs for after-sale services.

It joins Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) , which also recently announced it is investing in an electric car charging system.

Kenya has joined the global push to promote the use of electric vehicles and reduce reliance on petrol and diesel. Fuel products are the country’s biggest import item.

Analysts acknowledge the high price of electric cars would not appeal to most African consumers but said scaling up production and favourable government policy could help bring prices down. "We are working closely with the Government to enact laws that will subsidise the cost of these vehicles and the attendant infrastructure such as storage and charging points," said Ms Oduor.

To help encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, Kenya reduced excise duty on the cars from 20 percent to 10 percent.

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) has also adopted electric vehicle standards.

By 2025, McKinsey estimates there will be more than 350 new electric vehicle models. This will pose unprecedented competition to established players like Tesla. Virtually every traditional carmaker across the globe is planning to launch electric vehicles. Start-ups, too, are getting in on the action.

In 2019, Reuters estimated that around 250 start-ups involved in the space had attracted over $20 billion (about Sh2 trillion) in venture capital.

In Kenya, scaling up the project will see both Kenya Power and KenGen generate revenue from vehicle owners who will require to charge their vehicles but this is heavily dependent on the technology picking up locally.

The use of electric vehicles has been gaining momentum in Western countries such as the Netherlands, Norway, Germany and the US as the world turns attention to cutting down on carbon emissions.

However, the high price, insufficient charging infrastructure and energy-storing batteries have been cited as the main challenges for the adoption and growth of the electric vehicle industry in African countries such as Kenya. The average price of an electric car is Sh6 million, which compares to a second-hand SUV imported into Kenya.

Imported used cars from Japan or the Middle East have offered an affordable route to vehicle ownership in Kenya and dominated the market for decades.

Nopia Ride, a taxi-hailing service that only uses electric cars, is scaling up operations in Kenya. The firm has installed charging stations in three locations, including the Two Rivers Mall, the Hub Karen and Thika Road Mall.

An electric vehicle runs on the power stored in batteries. The batteries take about an hour to fully charge and can drive for up to 250 kilometres.

Kenya Power in March partnered with Unep in a pilot launch of electric bikes project in Kenya. Under the pilot, the electricity distributor has received 25 e-bikes for its meter readers that will be used to test the usage of the motorcycle in Kenya.

Electric cars gradually drive into Kenyan roads

A few years ago, Kenyans and most of us knew little about electric vehicles (EVs) that were synonymous with developed nations such as the US, United Kingdom, China, and Germany.

The main reason for Kenya’s, and indeed Africa’s, slow adoption of electric vehicles is that the transition requires heavy investments in technology and infrastructure that many developing countries cannot afford.

However, things are changing and at a rather fast pace, especially here in Kenya as international EV startups enter the country in troops. And the momentum to adopt electric vehicles will only accelerate as calls for measures to curb pollution in a bid to reverse climate change impacts get louder.

Some of the startups that have set their bases in Kenya include BasiGo, Kiri, and Opibus. And from the look of things, more and more are set to join the bandwagon.

BasiGo is pioneering a new generation of eco-friendly buses that are set to reduce carbon emissions in major cities like Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu and Mombasa that are choking in dangerous fumes.

"For years, diesel-powered buses have been the only viable solution for bus operators in Kenya. We are excited to provide public transport operators with a new option: state-of-the-art electric buses that are more affordable, and reliable, and reduce bus operator exposure to the rising costs of diesel fuel,” says Jit Bhattacharya, BasiGo CEO and co-founder.

ALSO READ

Bhattacharya brings a wealth of experience in the local EV ecosystem having worked as CEO of Missiion Motors in Silicon Valley as well as senior manager for Project Titan, an electric car project by Apple Inc.

Early this month, BasiGo raised Sh111.3 million in pre-seed funding to electrify Kenya's public transport system. The capital will fund the construction of 25 and 36-seater capacities with a range of about 250 kilometres, enough to cover daily trips.

Clients will also be able to acquire buses through a financing deal, whose pilot programme will be rolled out once the first bus arrives later in the year. This will allow customers to purchase buses on a usage-based subscription.

“The cost of electric bus technology has come down dramatically over the last 10 years, to the point where electric buses can offer significant savings compared to fossil-fuel buses,” Mr Bhattacharya noted.

Our goal is to help bus owners in Kenya realise these savings, and in the process, help Kenya become a global leader in sustainable public transport.”

Opibus also raised Sh834.37 million ($7.5 million) in equity and grant funding to scale up production of electric motorcycle and bus manufacturing from next year.

“We are proud to be backed by globally recognised investors providing a balance between deep-tech and emerging market expertise,” said Filip Gardler, Opibus co-founder and chief executive officer.

“We have together reached a clear strategic and visionary alignment – with the conviction that mass manufacturing of electric mobility solutions in Africa will not only make the products more accessible and affordable but also lead to one of the largest industrialisation and welfare transitions of the region in modern time.”

Opibus, which was started in 2017, converts diesel and petrol vehicles and motorcycles engines into electric thus reducing carbon dioxide emissions, which are the major contributors of air pollution in urban areas.

“The targets and objectives we’ve set for Opibus might seem bold, however, it is a mission that has become more important than ever. We have a responsibility to the coming generations and the earth as a whole.”

In July, the company introduced an electric mining vehicle, which it said will cut mining operational costs by up to 60 percent, helping miners to convert their fleet of vehicles to electric cars without having to invest in new vehicles.

“Their vehicles are half the cost compared to second-hand fossil fuel vehicles and perform better in the harsh road conditions. We are excited to be supporting them in their growth phase to achieve true impact at scale,” said Helen Lin, principal of One Ventures, which is one of Opibus' financiers.

As electric cars drive into Kenya, energy firms are seeking a slice of the rapidly growing market by installing charging stations. Taking the lead in this transformation are firms such as Kenya Power and Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

Kenya Power said in March this year that it would build a nationwide network of public charging points, removing one of the hurdles for use of electric cars in Kenya.

“As part of our implementation plan, we are developing appropriate infrastructure and building internal capacity to enable us to support the use of electric vehicles across the value chain,” said Kenya Power managing director Bernard Ngugi.

“To this end, we plan to set up charging facilities across the country beginning with Nairobi to support direct charging of vehicles.”

Another player is ChargeNet Kenya, the zero-emission mobility products and service subsidiary of Mayleen Corporation. The firm has already set up a number of charging stations in Nairobi.

At the ABC Shopping Mall along Waiyaki Way, ChargeNet’s EV station is already in use and has been charging for free for two and half months, a move aimed at promoting the uptake of electric cars in Kenya.

“At ABC Mall we are charging for free for three months to promote the idea of electric cars. We have universal EV chargers that can power an Asian or European electric car,” said Ruwan Fernando, CEO of Mayleen Corporation.

Similar stations in Kasarani and Ngong Racecourse are also set to be opened by ChargeNet.

Other emerging EV companies in Kenya include electric motorcycle manufacturer Kiri Electric, and Drive Electric, which leases electric vehicles and provides charging station installation and e-mobility consultancy.

A Bangladesh pharmaceutical firm, Square Pharmaceuticals plans to start production in Kenya following the completion of its Machakos plant.
This could lower the cost of malaria and diabetes drugs in the country which are normally imported mostly from Asian countries.
Apart from lowering the cost of drugs, it is expected to increase access to genuine drugs given the challenge of counterfeits and also generate 700 direct jobs.

In Kenya, there are an estimated 3.5 million new clinical cases of malaria and 10,700 deaths each year, with western Kenya and parts of Rift Valley being high risk areas.
The first phase of the plant lies on a six hectare land parcel at the tax-friendly Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Athi River with an initial investment of Sh2.8 billion ($25 million).
It has the capacity to produce over two billion tablets and capsules in a business year, making it the biggest pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in East and Central Africa, according to the company.
The total project cost is estimated at Sh8.4 billion ($75 million) and it is expected to help minimise the country’s dependency on pharmaceutical imports.
"Kenya will receive technology and training to manufacture difficult to make anti-malarial, anti-retroviral, anti-hypertensive, anti-psychotic and anti-diabetic drugs," said the company in a statement Monday.
Kenya imports medicines worth $600 million (Sh65 billion) annually, according to official statistics.
The firm's managing director Tapan Chowdhury said local pharmaceutical production has the potential to cut the cost of drugs by 40 per cent.

The company expects the plant to open up opportunities of local graduates of industrial pharmacy, engineering and chemistry.
Square Pharmaceuticals is accredited by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Medicine and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) UK, Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Australia, and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) as well as the Kenyan Pharmacy and Poison Board (PPB).
With a market capitalisation of $3 billion (Sh336 billion), Square Pharmaceuticals is the leader of the Bangladesh pharmaceuticals market and the flagship company of Bangladesh conglomerate Square Group, which comprises 27 companies and over 60,000 employees operating across a number of sectors including textiles, IT, consumer product, toiletries, banking, insurance, media and agro-processing.
In the 2020-2021 financial period the Square Pharmaceuticals turnover was close $700 million from the supply of medicines to 45 countries.
