Dar to get eight vehicle flyovers
FEASIBILITY studies and designs for eight more flyovers in the city of Dar es Salaam are ready, the National Assembly was told yesterday.
Tabling budget estimates of the Ministry of Works and Transport for the 2021/22 financial year, minister Leonard Chamuriho said the project seeks to end continual traffic snarl-ups that adversely affect the economy of the commercial capital.
The infrastructures will add to two finished flyovers, namely the Mfugale flyover on Nyerere Road and Kijazi interchange on the Morogoro Road -Sam Nujoma-Mandela Expressway junction, with the new
flyovers slated for road junctions at Mwenge, Morocco, Magomeni, Selander Bridge, Fire, Oysterbay, Buguruni and Tabata.
The government is working on mobile flyovers in major cities for emergency use when infrastructures are impaired or rendered impassable, especially for Dar es Salaam, Dodoma and Mwanza, he said.
The mobile or Mabey flyovers are logistic support bridges working as pre-fabricated truss bridges, often used by military contingents in facilitate off road heavy duty transportation of equipment or personnel, or in upgrade routes for heavier traffic, replacing bridges damaged by firepower, or during floods.
As for decongesting the city of Dar es Salaam, the minister said the construction of the rapid transit bus terminal at Ubungo, at the former upcountry bus terminal, was on course.
He listed road tarmacking projects completed by April 2021 as including Mbezi – Malambamawili – Kinyerezi – Banana (14km), Tegeta - Kibaoni - Wazo Hill - Goba - Mbezi (Morogoro Road) 20 kilometers long, part of Mbezi Mwisho – Goba, Tangi Bovu – Goba (9km) and Kimara Baruti – Msewe – Changanyikeni (2.6km).
Others are Banana – Kitunda – Kivule – Msongola, (14.7km) part of Kitunda– Kivule (3.2km), Ardhi – Makongo – Goba (part of Goba – Makongo 4km road) and Tegeta Kibaoni – Wazo Hill – Goba – Mbezi/Morogoro Road (part of Mbezi Mwisho – Goba 7km road), Wazo Hill - Madale – Goba (5km).
Works in progress were listed as Ardhi – Makongo – Goba (part of Ardhi -Makongo 5km road) which has reached 20 per cent and Wazo Hill – Madale Section (6km) at 80 per cent of planned works.
Work on the Kibamba – Kisopwa – Kwembe – Makondeko road, including Kibamba – Mloganzila (4km) was largely complete and designs for the Mloganzila – Makondeko (1km) section are being completed, he stated.
“Tendering processes are ongoing to procure contractors for Goba - Matosa – Temboni (6km) as well as Mjimwema – Kimbiji – Pembamnazi (27km),” he said.
“The government is also mobilizing resources for the expansion of Mwai Kibaki Road (9km) and Kongowe – Mjimwema – Kivukoni Ferry (25km), the minister added.
