You seem to limit democracy as a political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections. Lakini weengine tunaiangalia demokarasia kwa mapana zaidi which include a rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens and the protection of the human rights of all citizens.
Kama nilivyosema kwenye posts nyingine, tatizo hapa sio kuwa au kutokuwa na democracy. The real problem ni sisi Watanzania wenyewe. I posted this somewhere else let me repeat it here. I know that we have talked incessantly about making change, but we have never asked the question if most people really want change. Personally, I do not see it. If people really wanted to change, they would. There is no one great power, alien or other, that seems to have control over ourselves.
So, before any of us start to blame concepts like democracy, religion or government for the lack of positive change, remember that governments, society, religions, nations and so on are made up of individuals. Many individuals develop or believe in irrational, illogical or false concepts and it is these individuals who need to change. It is only individuals that truly can make change, not concepts. There seems to be so few people who are aware, rational, logical, empathetic and intelligent enough to offer or accept positive change. Many of the members here at JF have come up with great ideas, but how do a few change the minds of the many, especially when the many do not desire change?
The biggest reason that Tanzanians do not make positive change in their lives is fear. Fear of the unkown, fear of persecution, fear of alienation and so on. There are also people who have become very comfortable with their lives and do not want to change, even if it is positive. They are also known as indifference, laziness or apathy. Another fundamental reason, is Tanzanians have been programmed. We have people who have been educated or coersed to "believe" that their negative belief systems are correct and do not need to be changed. They are also known as delusion or brainwashed. We have plenty of them even here at JF. Then, we have people with ego who believe that they are beyond the need for any change.
If you read Masanilo's first post, it clearly shows that people want things to change. But people always want things to be better than they are. No matter how good we ever have it we will always want it to be better. But the other side of the coin is people's willingness to change themselves. This is the clincher. This is where it gets really tough because despite how good it could be people are very rarely willing to change themselves. Take, for example, the frog in water comparison, a frog will jump out of a pot of boiling water but if the water starts at room temperature and is brought to a boil what do you have? Cooked frog.
So, lets not blame concepts. Lets blame ourselves first. The water in the pot is boiling up but we don't want to jump out of it. Instead, we are blaming the pot. We will end up being cooked in the pot just like the frog.
