[h=1]United take 22 to Basel[/h]Manchester United have taken a 22-man squad to Switzerland ahead of Wednesday's crunch Champions League tie against FC Basel.

Sir Alex's men left Manchester Airport at 10:30 GMT on Tuesday but without the suspended Michael Carrick - he picked up his third booking of the campaign in the 2-2 home draw against Benfica - and a clutch of injured players, including Dimitar Berbatov, Javier Hernandez and both da Silva twins.

That means there was room in the squad for teenagers Zeki Fryers and Larnell Cole, who travelled into Europe with the Reds for the first time. Darron Gibson, recently back from a long lay-off with a foot injury, was also on board for his first European trip since last season's semi-final first leg at FC Schalke.

After landing in Switzerland, United will head to the team hotel and then, after a brief rest, travel to FC Basel's St. Jakob-Park to train on Tuesday evening. Sir Alex and one of his players will also address the media at 18:00 local time (17:00 GMT) and we'll have live coverage of the press conference here on ManUtd.com.
Tomorrow's Group C clash kicks off at 19:45 GMT, with United needing to avoid defeat to ensure qualification to the Champions League knockout phase.

United squad: Amos, De Gea, Lindegaard; Evans, Evra, Ferdinand, Fryers, Jones, Smalling, Vidic; Cole, Fletcher, Gibson, Giggs, Nani, Park, Valencia, Young; Diouf, Macheda, Rooney, Welbeck

Basel v United preview

United need at least a point to qualify for the knockout stages...

Form guide
In the five Barclays Premier League games since the derby defeat to City, United have yet to concede a goal from outfield play - Demba Ba's disputed penalty for Newcastle being the only time the defence has been breached. The Reds have scored one goal in each of those five games and picked up four wins and a draw. In terms of the Champions League, home draws with Basel and Benfica have handed the initiative to the Portuguese side in the group. Basel have won seven games on the trot in the Swiss Super League and are clear of Lucerne at the top of the table.

Ins and out

Javier Hernandez joined the injury list by sustaining ankle ligament damage on Saturday but Danny Welbeck is fit again and Dimitar Berbatov also has a chance of being ready in time. Tom Cleverley, Michael Owen and Anderson remain on the sidelines and influential midfielder Michael Carrick is suspended. The Da Silva twins, Fabio and Rafael, will hope to overcome the knocks that kept them out of the Aston Villa win. Benjamin Huggel has been struggling with injury for Basel while Marco Streller is an option alongside Alexander Frei if the hosts opt for a two-pronged attack.
