Ferguson beats Wenger in race to sign promising defender.

Manchester united have confirmed that they have signed Fulham's burgeoning centre-back Chris Smalling.

Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly faced competition for the player's signature from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, but the Greenwich-born defender, as stated by Goal.com UK sources earlier today, Tuesday, has transferred to the reigning Premier League champions in a £7 million deal.

A statement on the club's official website confirmed: "Manchester United has agreed terms for the transfer of Chris Smalling from Fulham.

"Chris has agreed personal terms with the club and will join for the beginning of the 2010-2011 campaign.

"He will remain at Fulham until the end of the current season."

Ferguson, meanwhile, could have sealed a deal for the English prospect due to the ambiguous future of Serbian stopper Nemanja Vidic, who has been continuously linked with a move to Catalan kings Barcelona.

Vermaelen escapes broken leg
Gunners centre-back might play against Man United



Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has not suffered a broken leg after limping off against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The initial fear was that the Belgian centre-half had fractured his leg and that he could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but the injury is not as bad as first suspected.

Indeed, the 24-year-old could even make the starting line-up for the weekend game against title rivals Manchester United in the Premier League, although this may come just too soon.

Manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal's official website: "There is no fracture in Thomas' leg but his injury still has to be assessed.
