Klopp - 'If we parked the bus we'd be whistled out of the stadium'

Reds boss says his team has a duty to entertain while trying to end trophy drought.

The Reds have re-written the record books with their goal scoring blitz so far this season. They have netted 103 times in 40 matches - their most prolific campaign since 1895/96.

Liverpool are on course to achieve back-to-back top-four finishes in the Premier League for the first time in nearly a decade as they prepare for Saturday’s visit of Newcastle.
However, Klopp wants silverware to go with the accolades and insists his side’s swashbuckling style is the right way to deliver it.

We are here to win trophies and performance has a big influence on that,” he said.

“We are not a club who won a last trophy two or three years ago and now everybody thinks ‘okay, that’s the way they play’.

“If we were to park the bus constantly in home games people would whistle us out of the stadium because they think that’s not what we want to watch, and we don’t win anything.

“So we have to come from the other side, we have to dominate football games. To play, to do, to be kind of exciting. That’s the only way for us.

“I am happy Man City are doing so well because they are doing it on one level higher. It’s not that it is some team that come through games somehow with the help of the post, the crossbar or something like that, winning 1-0. They will win the title.

“This is one way to be successful. And with our young history I don’t think there is any other way than to convince the people with football.”

The Champions League represents Liverpool’s remaining hope of glory this term with the 5-0 thrashing of Porto putting them on the brink of the quarter-finals.

Progress is crystal clear and Klopp’s Reds are performing with a swagger
but he knows that teams are remembered for the trophies they win.

“There will always be people who say ‘yes but’,” Klopp added.
“It’s true to say that we didn’t win anything in the two and a half years here so far but we played two finals and that’s not too bad. It’s only bad because in the 20 years before it was better. That’s not my problem.

“What people will say about us? We won’t really know until they look back. Why should I think about that? I cannot influence it.

“We are in a good moment, it’s not a perfect moment but a good moment. So let’s carry on - hard work, win football games and then we’ll see.”

FSG's Liverpool reign will be defined by trophies rather than balance sheets

Champions League represents only remaining hope of trophy drought not stretching to seven years

By James Pearce
3 MAR 2018

Six years ago this week Liverpool principal owner John W Henry and chairman Tom Werner were part of the celebrations in the Wembley dressing room.

The 2012 League Cup triumph was supposed to be the trophy that launched a new era of success under Fenway Sports Group.

“It’s the first step to take us into a direction we want to go,” beamed Henry in the bowels of the national stadium.

Werner added: “I hope this is a statement, even though it’s only one marker it gives us the enthusiasm to move forward.”

It remains the last piece of silverware Liverpool won. The story since then has been one of false dawns, agonising near misses and unfulfilled potential.

Just 11 weeks after Kenny Dalglish climbed those 107 steps up to the Royal Box, the Kop icon was shown the door following defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

Henry later insisted that not even a cup double would have saved Dalglish after the Reds limped home to eighth in the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers delivered the most exciting brand of attacking football Anfield had witnessed since the 1980s as Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge wreaked havoc.

But on the brink of greatness – needing seven points from their final three matches to be crowned champions after a 24-year wait – the wheels came off.

Luis Suarez left for Barcelona and Liverpool made an absolute mess of replacing him. Rodgers' reign went into free-fall.

Jurgen Klopp picked up the pieces and progress over the past two-and-a-half years has been impressive. He has delivered on his vow to turn “doubters into believers”.

Klopp's impact was instant as he galvanised the club and Liverpool reached two cup finals but endured a double dose of heartache in the League Cup and the Europa League.

His first full campaign at the helm delivered the top target of returning the Reds to the Champions League.

This term Liverpool have gone to the next level. They are scoring goals at a rate unsurpassed since 1895/96.

In most other seasons a tally of 57 points after 28 games would put you in title contention. But Manchester City's dominance has moved the goalposts and blown everyone else away.

After early exits from both domestic cups, the Champions League represents the Reds' only remaining hope of that trophy drought not stretching to seven years.

That kind of wait can never be acceptable for a club of Liverpool's stature but this week served to reinforce the progress being made both on and off the field.

Having reported a £50million loss six years ago, the Reds' latest accounts for 2016/17 showed a £39million profit. Revenue over that period has nearly doubled from £183.6million to £364million.

Having already transformed Anfield with the new Main Stand, FSG will give the green light for work to start this summer on the £50million new training complex at Kirkby.

Finances lay bare the challenge of trying to compete with Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United. However, Liverpool have undoubtedly been spending their money more wisely under Klopp.

This is a squad which has evolved with signings like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk. FSG have been getting much more bang for their buck.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp with FSG owner John Henry on the pitch at Anfiel
Klopp gambled by sanctioning the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona but so far his stance has been vindicated. Liverpool have been better off as a powerful, united force.

Tuesday night's visit of Porto will be another milestone - the first time Anfield has hosted a Champions League knockout tie during FSG's ownership.

Liverpool are also well placed to achieve successive top-four Premier League finishes for the first time since 2008/09.

It's a stepping stone to where the Reds want to be. But six years on from that day at Wembley it remains the case that FSG's reign will be defined by trophies rather than balance sheets.

Both on and off the pitch, Liverpool currently have the perfect springboard.
