Virgil van Dijk says supporters don’t know the full story behind his protracted £75million transfer to Liverpool.

The Dutch centre-back saw his hopes of making the switch to Anfield dashed last summer after the Reds stood accused by Southampton of making an illegal approach.

Van Dijk subsequently tried and failed to force a move by submitting a transfer request and was banished to train on his own before being reintegrated into the squad after the window shut.

He finally got his wish in January after Southampton accepted Liverpool’s world record bid for a defender.

“People don’t know what really happened,” Van Dijk told the BBC.

“I kept my head down and kept playing. I was out for eight months and was just happy to play again.

“I just switched on again after the transfer window in the summer. I didn’t think about anything until I got a phone call from the Southampton board.”

Van Dijk has enjoyed an impressive start to his Liverpool career but admits he needed time to adjust to the demands of playing for Jurgen Klopp.

“I am getting used to how we play,” he said. “The intensity of our game is a lot higher than what I was used to.

“Every day here is tough. We work very hard, run a lot and there is a big difference. I needed to step up my game, especially in the beginning.”

With Liverpool third in the Premier League and on the brink of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, spirits are high in the squad and Van Dijk is hungry for silverware.

“I came here to achieve everything possible,” he added.

“I made the choice to come here based on everything. I love the fans, the atmosphere in the stadium and at away games. The quality we have in our team is unbelievable. I am proud and happy to be here.

“Klopp is very good and an amazing guy as well. A lot of the attributes he has makes us achieve good things in the future.”
