Half time ratings - Firmino sharp and shines

Simon Mignolet 6

Entertained the crowd during the opening minutes with the ball at his feet, the Belgian wasn’t really tested with his hands until picking the ball out of the back of the net.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 6

Some good link-up play with Salah down the right flank in the early exchanges but has largely gone under the radar.

Joel Matip 6

Brought the ball out of defence at every opportunity and showed neat speed to hold off Williams during one foot race. A lot busier the longer the first half progressed.

Dejan Lovren 6

Had been reasonably solid until a slight misread of a throughball led to him tackling on to Williams, who recovered possession and went on to score Bilbao’s equaliser.

Alberto Moreno 7
A surprise starter ahead of new signing Robertson, a willing outlet as ever down the left flank and can’t be faulted for his defending. Came close shortly before the interval.

Emre Can 6
Some iffy decision-making underlined how he remains a little way short of his team-mates in terms of fitness following his summer exertions with Germany.

James Milner 6
In a central midfield role for the first time since an ill-fated stint at Stoke in spring, Milner did as Milner does, keeping matters simple and limiting his runs forward. Odd he didn’t take the penalty, though.

Marko Grujic 7
A chance for the Serbian to impress from the start after some impressive cameos. Picked himself up after being clobbered by Williams and his range of passing improves with every outing.

Mohamed Salah 7
Not quite at his lightning bolt fastest but didn’t have to be. Played his part in most of Liverpool’s best attacking efforts and drew a save with one low effort.

Roberto Firmino 8
Has improved considerably throughout pre-season, and impressive here. Sharp, efficient and demonstrated some clever touches and a swift turn of pace. Won the penalty and converted it. Definite starter next week.

Divock Origi 6
Made some lively runs ahead of the midfield and got on the end of decent balls by Firmino and Salah. However, failure to convert either will have been a concern. Lacking confidence

KLOPP: I DON’T NEED A CENTRE-BACK

Jurgen Klopp insists he is "happy" with his Liverpool centre-backs ahead of the new Premier League season.

Virgil van Dijk was a target for Liverpool earlier this summer, but the Reds withdrew their interest after Southampton complained to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach.

Klopp, though, maintains he is not desperate to bring in defensive recruits before kicking off the new league campaign against Watford on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

"Look out there and tell me five that would make us stronger. Five. Then you win a prize. It's difficult how it is," said Klopp, following Liverpool's 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao last weekend. "We have four. I don't think we need more. We cannot force the things and we would never get a centre back just because (of the sake of it).

"I'm happy. You can imagine we are still working on different things and we will see if it works. I am already here to work with this squad and not just always thinking 'but if we don't get this or this'."
