Reports on Tuesday night suggest Sturridge will be sidelined until the new year.
Press Association Sport understands Sturridge had a scan on Tuesday after complaining of an issue with his hamstring at St James? Park. The result of that scan has revealed a strain and as a result the striker will be sidelined for weeks rather than months.
After missing most of last season through injury and finally returning to action in September, this is the third injury the 26-year-old has had since Jurgen Klopp was appointed just two months ago.
Sturridge missed the Europa League home game against Bordeaux a fortnight ago, but returned to the squad against Swansea City the following weekend. He then played an hour against Southampton last week, scoring twice.
After that outing against Southampton, his first start under Klopp, Sturridge played the final half an hour in the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.
In total, this is the 18th injury he has had since arriving at the club less than three years ago. He has started just four times this season, and just 12 in the whole of last season.
The Reds? No. 15?s mentality has been questioned, with Klopp last month saying that he must realise the difference between ?serious pain? and ?only pain?.
Klopp did though say that sometimes with a player returning from so long on the sidelines it was ?normal? for small set-backs until full match fitness is achieved.
Liverpool play in Switzerland against FC Sion on Thursday night, before hosting West Brom at Anfield on Sunday.
