Jose Enrique: Brendan Rodgers Has Alienated Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Me

Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique has accused Liverpool of alienating himself, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini in an effort to sell this summer.

The trio were left out of Brendan Rodgers’ pre-season plans and it looks increasingly likely that they will all depart Anfield before the closing of the transfer window.

The former Newcastle United defender saw new signing Joe Gomez take his place in the matchday squad against Stoke City at the weekend but insists he will continue to fight for his place.

The Spaniard told Marca that while he is in a difficult position with just one year left on his current deal, he refuses to give up and hopes Rodgers will change his mind:

“I’m in a difficult position.

The club have alienated Balotelli, Borini and me. I have a year left on my contract and I imagine the club will want to sell, but I still want to stay and fight as I always have.

I will not give up. I know from experience that football changes from day to night.”
Enrique, who made 119 appearances for Newcastle before moving to Liverpool in 2011, is also looking to exploit Liverpool’s lack of experience at left-back in an effort to regain a starting berth:

“I feel fine after two years with knee discomfort.

Plus in the squad here we only have one pure left-back [Alberto Moreno] and I know that if I stay I’ll play.

I want to prove that some are wrong.”
And while it looks likely that Enrique has played his last game for the Reds, especially with West Brom reportedly interested, the defender admits he hopes to stay in England as long as possible:

“What I think is that I will not play in a team better than this.

Liverpool are a match for Manchester United. I had a very good option to return to Spain, but [it] is complicated because the economy is very different from what exists here.

The only teams that can deal with what is paid in England are Real Madrid and Barcelona, so I would love to stay here until my legs stop me.”
