What if Floyd Mayweather was a White Man?
I feel a light tremor vibrate underneath my computer desk as i type these words. I hear high pitched feral squeaks and grunts. The sound of tiny rat like claws scuttling across a hard surface inside the walls around me. With each full stop i type, the closer they sound. The trolls have arrived, drawn here from nothing more than seeing the name. Floyd Mayweather.
Its become so commonplace for a certain section of Boxing fans to hate this man, they never even stop for a minute to observe why they dislike him so. Its just something that you have to do. Its popular to dislike Floyd Mayweather because the Majority of people do. Most Youtube Boxing channels or writers are aware of this and some (not all) obviously cater their content around this notion. Hate Floyd, its easier; more people will like me; i will receive less hate; i will receive more hits/subscribers/views. Thumbs up all round. They Passive aggressively acknowledge his skills, but at the same time let people know they think hes a douche bag, just so everyone is clear they still dont like him.
Well to be honest more recently more than ever, Ive actually warmed to him. I remember my support increasing after the shocking lack of any kind of sympathy for the man from a lot of Boxing fans after the Victor Ortiz head butt, the most blatant headbutt I've seen to memory in a modern fight; quite frankly disgusting. Floyd legally Knocked out Ortiz afterwards, but because Ortiz wasnt ready for the punch, the derision began, how could Floyd legally throw a punch? The evil man. Its not like he was fouled or anythin
oh hold on, he was. Lets ignore that. This was all back in September 2011. The point is, ill feeling was not piled upon the (then) champion Ortiz and his atrocious in the ring behaviour. The hate and scorn was poured upon Floyd Mayweather, a Floyd Mayweather who literally almost had his nose bone caved in, the sympathy, in overwhelming numbers was amazingly for Ortiz. This then really got me thinking and changed my entire mindset to Floyd in a big way, why does he get so much hate?
Im lucky enough to have earned a position through dare i say it, hard work and dedication to have a small number of people online who follow my ramblings but give me the rare freedom to express how i feel, without getting an ache arse about things. Its with this in mind i approach this next scenario
If Floyd Mayweather was white, the boxing world would universally embrace him. Not only as an amazing fighter arguably the best of his era, but they would take this man to their chest, with bursting Star Spangled teary eye inducing patriotic pride. I genuinely believe this and as a man outside of America I can sit atop my high horse (a black stallion) and watch this fascinating Floyd situation unfurl with a fervor that is unique to an outsider
I am aware how uncomfortable for some this idea is to raise. Im also aware i will not score many brownie points (no pun intended) for writing an article that is quite Pro Mayweather. Its literally fuel to an aggressively stoked fire for those who are not fans of my work. However i think it makes an interesting topic of discussion. Bypassing the continual diatribes against the man and at least taking tiny steps toward the root of the problem; of the hate.
Floyd is loud, boastful and in your face. He is extremely confident or cocky depending upon whom you ask. He often seems deliberately provocative (because he is) Many times his loud forceful personality is repellent for the viewer. Floyd Mayweathers nature is sometimes so extreme one often asks themselves the simple question
just why is he like this?"
I think its a combination of reasons, as a child a father in and out of prison; broken home; mother on drugs; the familiar tale of a tumultous upbringing from the poor black American home in the 80s. Never had wealth, now he has it. However i also believe Floyds nature is part and parcel of his tremendous boxing skills; we wouldnt have the sheer wizardry in the ring, the 43-0 and the phenomena of his Boxing mastery, if his personality was any less. If he was meek and apologetic. Yes master, no master. I dont think this kind of humble nature would have given birth to the ring skills we see today. If he was quiet and shy, i dont think this kind of attitude could have fostered the ability we see before us. The flip side of that being, the ability we see before us with Floyd, is exactly why he isnt quiet and shy.
Its almost like the classic case of the tortured genius. As amazing as they may be at what they do, there has to be a distinct "negative to them to counter balance it; for this person to sit correct within the universe. The Ying and the Yang. Ok before i go too spiritual on you motherfu**ers let me get to the meat of this article. What if Floyd was actually a white man.
Most of us Boxing fans are astute; sensible enough to think outside of the box in many situations and scenarios. May i ask you to do so here. I would like you to think of the helium like induced screams of the infamous white rapper Eminem. Another gentleman who has mastered his craft to an almost supernatural degree. Much like Mr Money Mayweather. Although one performs violent ditties over Dre Dre production and the other one punches people in various regions around the body, preferably the face. The point is they are both Mainstream media stars. So for the purposes of this section of my article, open your mind and view Floyd and Eminem as almost one and the same. Almost how Floyd and 50 Cent are almost seen as the same entity, different genre of entertainment but both as big; as popular or as known.
So Im focusing in on a section of white Boxing fans who are anti Mayweather. Focusing with a snipers resolve; merely to make a point. As fans of the sport we could learn a lot from music fans, in particular Rap music fans and their loyal support of Eminem. They seemingly have an infinite reserve of love for this man, regardless of him being for all intents and purposes an extremely offensive person. America loves Eminem. The western world loves Eminem. He may be offensive, but he is damn good at what he does, and that is all there is to it, nothing else. Nothing more to it. Or is there? Silly question
Both are high profile superstars. Eminem has without a shadow of comparable doubt been the more offensive to the public Conscience. Openly rapping about beating women. Strangling them. Setting fire to them. Hitting them. This is so recognised as a part of Marshall Mathers; women hating and the most brazen glorification of domestic violence throughout his music career, that its almost seen as funny when he says it. Thirteen years and counting of homophobia, beating up women and violence in his music. He is rapidly approaching 40 and still these themes are all throughout his music. It cant even be blamed on the rebellious hot headed nature of youth.
He even admits outside of his music he says the word fag. His wife has gone on camera revealing how he treated her with contempt disrespect and who knows what else. But hey, its Eminem, its Slim Shady its a persona, we accept it and love it.
So why do we not love the money flaunting rogue that is Money Mayweather. Who is merely a persona a character of Floyd Mayweather (as he has said himself) In the words of the curly topped Caucasian Mr Timberlake. Where is the love motherfu**ers?
The long lost tapes of Eminem as a teenager dissing black women, using the word n*gger were to be honest brushed under the carpet, and America and the world carried on loving him. Grammys; countless awards; accolades; respect and love from not just America, but the world
Doesnt it make you wonder why Floyd is so disliked by the (mostly American) public compared to one of the only other superstars globally recognised on his level Eminem?
I think if Floyd Mayweather had the same arrogance, the same flashy nature, but was Caucasian, white with blue eyes he would to be honest be adored. It is almost simple mathematics. If i may pull Mr Mathers aside from beating somebody, or setting them alight for a brief second and quote him from his song White America:
lets do the Math, if i was black i would have sold half, i aint have to graduate from Lincoln high school to know that
Look at these eyes, baby blue, baby just like yourself, if they were brown, Shady lose, Shady sits on the shelf, but Shadys cute
Let examine his run ins with the law (Eminem in the past found guilty of physical violence with a gun openly admits to class a drug use) some would argue Floyd wasnt even proven guilty of the claims against him, maybe (just maybe) he took the plea as a way out of the situation to save heartache stress for his kids? the very public court process? After all in his own words he says he was not guilty of the charges. Take a plea? or risk of 34 years in prison. 34 years or 90 days? If you were guilty or not, would you even risk 34 years? As a black man in front of a jury? I have no idea if he really is guilty or not; none of us really know bar him and those involved. But was it worth him risking putting himself through the whole process as a high profile black man in America? Lets examine
Los Angeles-based journalist Hiphop observer Michael Datcher who is also cultural critic co author to a book on rapper Tupac Shakur. Thinks at the time Eminem got off lightly because he is white.
Remember this wasnt for something he took a plea for, but for something he admits he did
Back then Datchet said: If you are a celebrity and if you have money - especially if you are European American and Caucasian, theres a different kind of justice.
He continues:
Something seems wrong when African Americans have been sent to jail for years for less severe crimes, he said. It seems unfair to me that this person could physically accost a man on the street and get no jail time.
"Its as if youre saying its okay to abuse people if youre a hip hop star with a major contract and youre white.
Why does the General public embrace the obviously more offensive Marshall Mathers, yet fail to rally behind and support Mayweather. Even if Eminem was facing the same Domestic charges as Floyd, i believe the coverage; the fans and the mood toward Eminem would be much more sympathetic. Would he have even gone to jail? The media and Boxing press for the most part are actually salivating over the thought of Floyd going to jail; read the coverage, they are enjoying the comeuppance of this brash and flash black man. I dont think however, their enjoyment is purely through seeing what they would say, justice being served. I think they lick their lips at his upcoming incarceration for a different reason, an altogether more sinister one.
Its a fascinating phenomena, in reality as clear as day racism under our eyes yet never really approached or spoken on outside of the black community. Considering his monumental talents as an athlete, the ratio of support/hate for Floyd doesnt seem right.
I would love this article to somehow cut with surgical precision the pale flesh of the closet white racist, delve deep within the core of their being, and twist an exposed throbbing nerve. Sure he has burnt money, and extravagantly flashed his earnings, but is that really worse than a rather spirited jumping headbutt to the nose? Like the mentally suspect Victor Ortiz? Or the allegedly drunk driving Kelly Pavlik (who has a very public history of alcohol abuse) who admitted to failing to control a vehicle and failing to report the accident but had his charges amazingly dropped because he wasnt breathalysed??
what about Chavez Jr and his three misdemeanor charges, two for drunk driving and one for driving without a valid license. These two athletes are not condemned like Floyd is. I could of course state numerous other non black athletes who compared to Floyd to be honest, receive an easy ride in these kind of situations. Skin colour sadly even today, plays a part in this.
Perhaps the hate is because he has picked and chosen opponents and not faced some of the best fighters at their prime? Well of course, that is definitely not an exclusive trait of Mayweather - is that really enough of a reason for you to hate this fighter? This great fighter? I would argue with you sir or madam, that its actually something of an honour that we as boxing fans get to watch him perform live.
Imagine in detail a boxing world where Floyd Mayweather was white. Blonde hair; proud; true and American. I picture Chris Evans the Actor who plays Captain America standing upon a grassy hill chest expanded, fists clenched. Side profile. Something a little like this:
Those lovable moments when this alternative universe white Mayweather was to throw money at the screen, oh how we would chortle and enjoy. His almost rap like persona seen as affable, cute a little child like but endearing. A big boy. The general public would warm to him, this is how a white Mayweather would be viewed. Add on to this his amazingly smart actual fighting skills, his 43-0 record, and this boxing enigma was white? Would you seriously tell me without a trace of emotion across your moist quivering face, America wouldnt love him? Tell me they wouldnt and i will release the hounds on you.
Even the issue with the Domestic battery would, as i said be seen as less severe if Floyd Mayweather was white. Much like say Actor Lindsay Lohan constantly in and out of prison for Drugs; cocaine; theft; drunk driving. Yet seen as an American cutie pie whos a bit naughty.
Yet with Floyd, a man who has actually comparatively done nothing compared to some of the biggest Caucasian names in the media, he is hated. Literally hated.
Here is the cold dark (excuse the pun) truth
For a certain section of white people (most of the Floyd Haters) Floyd represents everything they despise, many of these people have never directly confronted these emotions. But they have no choice but to confront them. Especially on say Hbo 24/7 the reality TV show where Floyd is at his braggadocios best. A stage persona superbly acted and performed by Floyd to deliberately rile these very people. Floyd makes them confront these deeply suppressed racially tinged tendencies, and instead of deal with how they feel, they lash out. It goes without saying this of course is not the case for every white boxing fan who is repulsed by Floyds antics, but i would argue it is the case for the majority.
While on the subject of race, Floyd Mayweather has been called racist for supporting black athletes in the NBA. Yet at the weigh in for the big fight with Miguel Cotto, Cotto says he is going to win for his Latin heritage Not an eye lid was batted. If Floyd was to say Im going to win for all African-Americans
what do you think the reaction would be. Be honest, i think there would be uproar. I dont think Cottos comment was racist, but if Floyd would have said it, i feel many would have said it was. Doesnt seem fair does it. Why does this hypocrisy go ignored?
I used to really dislike Floyds bragging. But over time Ive warmed to him. A black man basking in lavish surroundings smiling with large amounts of money can conjure up a similar nauseous image to certain people as a group of British Asians (Pakistani or Indian) in a Ferrari or the newest Audi. The closet racists confused emotions almost see a cheek to this; a disruption amongst the order. A display of wealth from a non white. From one who is below them. A black man who isnt humble? How dare he. Shine my Cobblers boy.
I constantly say to many only when he is gone will Floyd be appreciated. In ten years time many people will look back in embarrassment at their thinly veiled white supremacist tendencies, the easiest person to project them on being Floyd Mayweather, and these people will weep a torrent of tears, or worse look toward the bottle; the only escape from the desolate feeling of hopeless shame. Perhaps they reach into the lower draw and stroke the pistol handle, looking at it longingly. Is it worth carrying on? How they hated on this man who donates millions to charities, something which is rarely spoken on or covered, because it doesnt sit well with the image most enjoy portraying of him.
Its even ignored for the most part the way Larry Merchant longtime commentator for HBO sports clearly dislikes Mayweather as a person, openly shows cold hostility toward him when interviewing and rarely treats Floyd with the courtesy some would argue a commentator should show an undefeated 43-0 multiple weight class champion. After Floyd called him out in the post fight interview in September, a build up of anger on Floyds part from Merchants sustained dislike of Mayweather in most of his Post Fight interviews with the man, i personally thought Merhcant had it coming, although i do believe in respecting elders. Floyd later apologised to Merhcant for this, something Merchant conceded to on live TV after Floyds fight with Cotto. A gracious move on the part of Floyd, done off camera, without press, lets see if Floyd gets praise for doing this, something in my humble opinion, he didnt really have to do. Lets see the appreciation of Floyds kindess toward this frail old man in the Boxing media print. I wont hold my breath.
There are many in history with greater legacies one could argue and of course i wouldnt disagree. But most of these greats got beat several times many would argue back. Because he has not faced the consistent high quality of fighters the greats faced, and because he never will (he plans to retire in under two years) Who knows how great Floyd would have become. All we have as a gauge for that, is the black man we see before us.
For right now however; today, he is a great fighter who may yet, still be seen in my opinion amongst historys greatest boxers
and they hated on him simply because his skin was brown.
they hate me when Im at the top but once my career is over they are gonna really miss me - Floyd.
See! Pacquiao has it so easy!
