Five most memorable Premier League home openers

It's a well-known fact that Stamford Bridge is a tough place to visit and Chelsea's home record has been very impressive in the Premier League over recent years, with us winning every opening home game since 2003.

The last time Chelsea failed to take all three points in the opening home game at Stamford Bridge was against Newcastle in 2002 when the two teams played out a 1-1 draw. Boudewijn Zenden netted on his debut with Clarence Acuna scoring for the visitors.

Chelsea will be looking to extend our opening day home record when newly promoted Leicester City visit on Saturday.

It will be the first chance for Chelsea's new faces to perform in front of the home crowd and after the encouraging win at Burnley on Monday night,- Jose Mourinho will be looking to see his side take maximum points again to remain at the top of the table.

The recent unbeaten home record is in no small part down to the 'Special One' and Jose's two spells in charge of the club have only ever seen one home league defeat.

Taking a trip down memory lane, here are some of the more unforgettable opening day wins that the club have enjoyed over recent years...

5. Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United (2004/05)

Jose Mourinho's first game in charge at Stamford Bridge was against Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United.

With all eyes on Mourinho’s first Chelsea XI, the manager put his faith in a certain Didier Drogba and the Ivorian striker making his debut after signing from Marseille was instrumental in Eidur Gudjohnsen's winning goal.

Drogba's header on from a cross-field pass by Geremi fell into the path of the Icelandic striker, who bundled the ball home for a first-half winner. The Blues went on to finish unbeaten at the Bridge that season and won a first league title for 50 years

4. Chelsea 3-2 Birmingham City (2007/08)

In 2007/08, Chelsea opened their Premier League campaign in ground-breaking fashion. Following Michael Essien's memorable winner, the 3-2 victory over Birmingham set a new top-flight record of 64 home games without defeat.

Birmingham scored twice in the opening 36 minutes, but the Blues were back level after goals from Claudio Pizarro and Frenchman Florent Malouda. The Ghanaian's wonder strike secured the victory.

Though the season started well that year, Mourinho was to end his first spell in charge of the club the month after, and we would finish second behind Manchester United.

3. Chelsea 4-0 Portsmouth (2008/09)

Under Luiz Felipe Scolari the following year, the Blues sure did play up Pompey and Harry Redknapp's side were on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

An outstanding performance from Deco helped Chelsea to the win and the former Portuguese international capped his individual display with a swerving 25-yard shot just moments from the end.

Joe Cole, Nicolas Anelka and Frank Lampard scored the opening three goals in a productive first half.

2. Chelsea 6-0 West Brom (2010/11)

The Blues opened their title defence in the 2010/11 season in comprehensive fashion, scoring a huge 12 goals in our first two league games.

Didier Drogba notched a hat-trick as Chelsea thrashed West Brom at Stamford Bridge. Florent Malouda bagged the opening and closing goals with Frank Lampard adding the other, with the club's attack at the time as formidable as it had ever been.

The win was sandwiched between two league demolitions of Wigan Athletic, who were beaten 8-0 as Chelsea sealed the title the season before. The Blues then visited the DW Stadium and came away with a second consecutive 6-0 win following the win over the Baggies, putting us top after two games.

1. Chelsea 2-0 Hull (2013/14)

Last season's campaign saw Jose Mourinho announce his Stamford Bridge return with a win over Hull City.

Oscar and Frank Lampard bagged a first half goal apiece to give the club a comfortable opening day victory over Steve Bruce's Tigers, though Lampard had an early penalty saved by Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Mourinho previously claimed that he had become 'the Happy One' following his return to the club and the Portuguese will be hoping to take the Premier League by storm once again this season.

I think itakuwa hivi au mnaonaje?

Hivi jamani kwanini tusimchukue Di Maria?
