Danny Murphy suggests Chelsea might already have their new Thiago Silva
Danny Murphy believes Wesley Fofana has the qualities to play the role of ball-playing defender at Chelsea, just like Thiago Silva.
On Saturday, it was all about Fofana’s headed goal, and it is hardly a surprise.
It was Chelsea’s first goal after a three-game goal drought and their only second goal in seven games. The Blues desperately needed someone to score, and Fofana did just that.
Murphy, however, pointed out that Fofana offered far more than just the goal.
“When you play for Chelsea, you need to be good on the ball, you need to be [able to play] forward passes with confident,” the former England international told BBC
MOTD when speaking about Fofana.
“We see the progressive passing, somebody, similar to [Thiago] Silva, who’s got the confidence to play on the front foot and get Chelsea up the pitch, which they’ve lacked in recent weeks.
“His passing is excellent, he’s comfortable on the ball, and he’s a threat in both boxes.”
The 22-year-old completed 11 passes into the final third in the 1-0 win over Leeds United the joint-second most among Chelsea players after Enzo Fernandez (14).
