Conte-type football may last longer than he does at Chelsea

Perhaps Antonio Conte is too involved to appreciate the irony of it. The man who has complained about Chelsea’s recruitment will probably pose the biggest test of their ability to hire. The objective will not be to find a centre-back or a striker, but a manager;probably in the summer, possibly earlier. If and when he goes, transfers will form a large part of the autopsies of his reign. It is worth remembering the words of a former Chelsea manager who has had transfer-related wrangles with various employers. “I was hoping for a sofa and they bought me a lamp,” complained Rafa Benitez in his time at Valencia. The situation is not the same at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have largely bought Conte sofas; just not the sofas he requested.

And when his successor eventually arrives, that poses certain issues when he comes to rearrange the furniture. The Italian would argue the assembled sofas were not of high enough quality, not from the top of the market, not expensive enough. But, to abandon the analogy, Chelsea have, with the notable exceptions of Michy Batshuayi and Ross Barkley, bought Conte-type players. Their squad is notable for the accumulation of centre-backs and wing-backs, defensive midfielders and target men. It suits a manager who wants to play 3-4-2-1. It suits one who likes three centre-backs, with specific players to fit the central and wider roles, two ball-winning, primarily destructive midfielders and a striker with aerial ability.

If Conte initially showed his ingenuity, adaptability and organisational prowess to reconfigure Chelsea six weeks into last season, they have doubled down on their title-winning formation since then. And to look at the some of the men touted as potential replacements – Maurizio Sarri, Diego Simeone, Luis Enrique, Carlo Ancelotti, Thomas Tuchel, Brendan Rodgers – is to see those who have espoused different systems and styles of play. Because, to draw comparisons with Conte’s peers, this is not a squad that would be immediately suitable for Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp or Mauricio Pochettino. Chelsea prospered last season because Conte identified what individual players and the collective could do. Any newcomer look to implement an alternative brand of football or to introduce another system may see what they cannot.

Most obviously, Chelsea’s current group of players is not particularly suited to high pressing. Nor does it seem a natural fit for Simeone’s 4-4-2 formation, Klopp’s narrow 4-3-3 or Guardiola’s much wider variant, with touchline-hugging wingers. Chelsea only possess three central midfielders with the energy to ape their Liverpool or Manchester City counterparts if they omit Cesc Fabregas, their best passer and slowest runner. Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses have produced the best form of their careers as wing-backs but the Spaniard may lack the speed and the Nigerian the defensive ability to operate as the kind of all-action full-backs Klopp, Pochettino or Sarri use in a back four. Collectively, it is not a group with the pace some managers would want or the creativity others would prioritise.

Chelsea have fallen in between two schools of thought. While an irascible Italian may disagree, they have Contified the Blues squad; not enough for the demanding manager but perhaps too much for many a possible successor’s liking. It may mean Conte’s system or Conte-type football lasts longer than he does.

The Premier League's central problem: the role of midfield controller

2 hours ago Guardian

Arguably this is the last really undefined position left on the Premier League pitch. We know what modern full-backs are meant to do. Inside forward, inverted winger: this is well-mapped territory. Even the goalkeeper has had a makeover, with his stepping out, his “advanced distribution”.

Whereas central midfield often seems to have something of the old orthodoxies, of one to get it and one to give it. There is still the idea of a central midfielder who can “run” a game, never mind the fact football has become so much more complex and positionally disciplined, more a fiercely collective thing. Trying to run a game can be a good way of trying to lose it too, so fine are the margins.

So pity the other central midfielder. We know what Kanté does, what Casemiro does. The defensive role is easy to praise, easy to understand. As for Bakayoko and others the job is to read the currents, to judge exactly what spaces to occupy, what gears to shift into.

Manchester City have mitigated this problem by dominating possession, and by moving their two best ball‑players, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva into deeper central roles. But they have also looked solid with Fernandinho and Ilkay Gündogan both in the pocket, two smart, disciplined, vigilant players. And recent history suggests this is the best way: intelligent team defence rather than driving big-ego midfielders.

Like every problem in football, this one will resolve itself, or be subsumed by other changes. Right now it is a fascinating lacuna, a subplot to almost every game, and a role that perhaps deserves a little more in the way of sympathy for those attempting to define and rework the position simply by playing it.

Hazard on Real Madrid's interest: 'In football you never know. I’m happy at Chelsea, and focused on them'

5 hours ago Marca (via www.101greatgoals.com)

Spanish daily Marca have an exclusive interview with Eden Hazard on Friday.
Marca: Many people in Madrid will encourage Chelsea, and you, against Barcelona. Also, there is a kind of bond between you and Zidane for many years. He has always talked wonders about his game. It must be incredible that someone like Zidane admires him and says things like that.

Hazard: Of course it is. I remember 10 years ago, when he first spoke about me, it was incredible. Know, he was my idol when I was a child, I have seen thousands of videos about him and now he is the manager of one of the best clubs in the world, so yes, it is a honour.

But I do not want to stop, I want to continue working and striving in the field. But yes, I love when people like him speak nicely about me.

Marca: You should know there are many people wishing to see you wearing white at some point.

Hazard: [Laughs] In football you never know. I’m happy at Chelsea, and focused on them.

Michael Owen confident Blues will hand their manager lifeline with comfortable win against West Brom

2 hours ago BetVictor

“Chelsea have won all three-league games against the Baggies since Antonio Conte took over and a month ago, you would have thought this was a banker home win,” Owen told BetVictor.

“The champions have conceded seven goals in their last two league games against Bournemouth and Watford, however, and looked completely out of sorts at Vicarage Road on Monday.

“Conte will demand his side bounce back against an Albion side who go into the game bottom-of-the-league.

“The Chelsea FC faithful will demand three points and an emphatic victory and I think the Blues will keep the points.”

Negotiations with Enrique ongoing, Conte to get €30m pay-off if sacked

3 hours ago Sport (via www.ibtimes.co.uk)

Chelsea have already opened negotiations with former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique to replace Antonio Conte if they finally decide to sack the Italian boss before the end of the current season, according to Sport.

The Spanish publication says in its Wednesday (7 February) front cover that the Premier League champions have told the Spaniard he will be given a contract for the rest of the campaign and for a further two years to help build a new long-term project.

Sport says that Conte will be given two more games to turn around the Blues' fortunes against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Monday (12 February) and Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round the following weekend (16 February), but defeat in either game could bring an end to the Italian's tenure at Stamford Bridge.

The former Juventus boss only signed a new deal at Chelsea in the summer and, according to the report, the Blues will need to pay him around €30m (£26.7m, $37m) in compensation if they decide to part ways with him before the end of the current season.

Sport say Chelsea want a long-term solution to help the Blues to secure a top four finish this term and then start a new long-term project in the summer.

Mark Lawrenson tips Chelsea to beat West Brom

Lawro's predicts 2-0.
It is obvious that all is not well for Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and I do not like the stories that are coming out in the papers from players who are supposedly unhappy with his training regime.

When they were winning games, no-one was saying anything, and training is the same whether you win, lose or draw.

It will be interesting to see what happens next and, if there are any serious differences between Conte and his squad or the Chelsea boardroom, whether they can be patched up.

The Blues had a bad defeat at Watford on Monday, which means people are talking about them being in crisis but I think that is a bit of an exaggeration, and I would certainly back them to win this game.

I wouldn't panic over West Brom at the moment either, even though they are four points from safety and could be further adrift by the time this game is played.

The big thing about the Baggies is that they look more likely to score a goal than many of the other sides down at the bottom of the table.

When push comes to shove, I do think Alan Pardew's side will start to pick up points - especially when they play against some of the lower teams, who will give them more chances.

Conte defends players despite poor results

4 hours ago Mirror

Asked if the players need to look in the mirror, he says:

"I think that in every situation you have to divide the situation, positive and negative.

When you have this period with poor results you have to divide the responsibility, me, the players and the club."

Dennis Wise urges Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill to step up and make themselves heard

3 hours ago West London Sport

Doubts over Antonio Conte's future as Chelsea boss have increased since Monday's 4-1 defeat at Watford.
Wise said: "There are certain things that happen on the pitch and you need players to sort them out. You look at what happened against Watford. They were all over the place and David Luiz decided to start going everywhere.

"It was down to Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill to say: 'Oi, pack it in. Come alongside us.' Those are the two you'd look at.

"I get the feeling they're very nice and quiet people. You sometimes need personnel in the middle who are not always liked, unfortunately, and have to say what needs to be said. I did it. John Terry did it for many years. You do have arguments inside that dressing room and you do say what needs to be said.

"He (Luiz) went off on one for some reason and he caused the whole back three problems at times. That's where you need someone to really have a go and pull them inside."

Antonio Conte opens up on Tiemoue Bakayoko's Chelsea struggles

2 hours ago Mirror

Bakayoko has failed to hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge.
Conte said: "For sure he is a young player.

"Last season he won the title in France with Monaco, to arrive in this league and adapt very quickly is not simple.

"But my task is to help him but every single player as well."

Former Blue Ray Wilkins doesn't think Chelsea's dressing room is 'strong enough'

an hour ago Sky Sports

Wilkins said: "What about the players, it's time they started performing as well. They're starting to put in performances now that got Mourinho the sack.

"They've got to play for this guy, he coaches with a lot of passion and you can see the way that he works but the players just aren't performing.

"Chelsea, at this moment, are quite average. I don't think the dressing room is strong enough with enough characters in there.

When you're on a slight slump where are the John Terrys who are going to pull this dressing room up and get these players playing?"

7 important Chelsea stories you may've missed today

an hour ago CFC Live

Real Madrid now see Thibaut Courtois as a likelier option than Manchester United's David de Gea, as they seek to sign a top-class goalkeeper in the summer.

Chelsea are amongst the clubs who are keeping tabs on AS Roma midfielder Alessandro Florenzi ahead of the summer transfer window.

Main points of Antonio Conte's presser: Olivier Giroud, Pedro are in contention for West Brom, Andreas Christensen could be available, Alvaro Morata is still injured; "Watford was a really bad game for us, but it can happen but it must only happen once"; Chelsea are not in title race only because of Manchester City's incredible results.

Conte also insists his commitment is 'totally' for Chelsea despite the club's dip in form.

Thibaut Courtois has stated that Chelsea's performance vs Watford was far below standard. The Begian also adds that the Blues are committed to Antonio Conte.

Eden Hazard remained uncertain when asked about Real Madrid's interest: "In football you never know. I'm happy at Chelsea, and focused on them."

Reports in Spain suggest the Zinedine Zidan is unhappy with the Isco's application and would allow him to leave should the club be able to sign Eden Hazard. However, Frenchman rules out playmaker's move from Real Madrid.

Antonio Conte discusses Michy Batshuayi's Chelsea exit

34 minutes ago Mirror

The Belgian scored twice on his Dortmund debut a week ago.
Conte said: "Now the transfer market has finished.

"We took the decision and now this is not important to say, we could do this or the other.

"Now we have to finish the season in the best possible way."

Conte: I'm going nowhere

4 hours ago Mirror

“I am not thinking for only one moment the possibility of going away from this club.

“My commitment and the players are totally for this club.

“A lot of time in football the manager and the coach depends on the result. At the moment we are having a poor result.

“For this reason we have to pay great attention.”
