Mourinho: Different philosophies
Jose Mourinho believes there are different ways in which to deal
with the potential departure of a player, and says it is the clubs
who ultimately have control when the individual is under
contract.
Speaking ahead of today’s game against Stoke City at Stamford Bridge,
Mourinho was asked if, at any of his previous clubs, he had ever tried
to keep a player who wanted to leave, and how the situation was
resolved.
‘I lost my best player at Inter, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic,’ said the Portuguese.
‘The situation was simple; the player wanted to go, we didn’t want him
to but we arrived at a situation where he had to go. Mr Moratti [the Inter
president] analysed with me and the board the amount of money we
wanted.
‘We knew we needed a top striker as a replacement, we found a
solution with Barcelona of changing Ibra for Samuel Eto’o plus a certain
amount of money, but the club who sells is in control.
‘I don’t like players that don’t want to play for me and for my club. Every
player has a price, it doesn’t matter which player. If you ask me, for
example, about Eden Hazard , do I want him to leave Chelsea? No. If he
wants to leave and not work with me or play for Chelsea, does he have
a price? I think he does. When I mention Eden I say that because he’s
the best player in the Premier League, but I could also say that about a
normal player.
‘I also understand the philosophy of managers and clubs that want to
keep players at any price. They want to say he stays even if he doesn’t
want to. My philosophy is not better, it’s just different.
‘Either way, when a player has a contract, the club has the power. The
manager and the board have the power to decide what to do and I
would never criticise people that think differently to me.
‘If tomorrow a player knocks on my door and says he doesn’t want to
work for me, I would say to the board let’s see what our value is for the
player. I always think the club decides the value of a player, not the
agent, not the player, not the father, not the cousin, the club.’
Turning his attention to his current squad, the Blues boss believes Petr
Cech ’s history as a Chelsea player ensures the goalkeeper’s own
decision will be respected fully when his future is discussed in the
summer.
‘ Petr Cech is not a player, he’s an institution,’ stated Mourinho . ‘Ten
years in goal going through everything; great moments, sad moments,
almost dying on the pitch.
‘He’s been through everything at this club. With institutions you have to
deal with it in a different manner. He’s won the right to be looked at and
respected in a different way, he’s won the right to be part of a
discussion and a decision.
‘Obviously Chelsea gave him a lot, but with what he’s given and is still
giving, he deserves a special perspective.’
Branislav Ivanovic has enjoyed a fine campaign for the Blues, and
Mourinho expects the Serbian to still be a Chelsea player next season.
‘It’s a simple situation; we want him to stay, he wants to stay, that’s the
most important thing,’ said the Chelsea manager.
‘I always say it’s a question of timing and I don’t believe Branislav wants
to play for another club.’
