It does appear, however, that an established "Big 4" has been created in Europe's premier club competition — and this year's group stage backs up the theory.

Barcelona, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, the last four winners of European soccer's top prize, were the top teams in group play, which finished Wednesday. In each of the last three seasons, at least three of that quartet has reached the semifinals of the Champions League. Madrid and Barcelona did so in 2011, too.

So, heading into the knockout stage that kicks off in February, it would be a big surprise if this season's champion didn't come from this small pool of juggernauts — teams who currently are playing football at another level to the rest.

"Everybody's there, so the Champions League starts now," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said of a last-16 lineup that contains 11 of the teams who advanced in the 2013-14 season.

No club has ever successfully defended the Champions League title since the competition's inception in 1992. Could Madrid be about to end that jinx?

At top of the Spanish league, a team boasting the attacking talents of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema was the only one to pick up a maximum 18 points in the group stage. Madrid has won its last 19 games in all competitions and Ronaldo, the reigning world player of the year, has already reached 30 goals for the season.

"I know I've got an extraordinary team," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said after Tuesday's 4-0 win over Ludogorets Razgrad. "I don't tire from saying this."

Any side that contains Lionel Messi will always have a great chance, and Barcelona will be expected to reach the semifinals after missing out last season. Barcelona's defense remains a concern — although it has only conceded seven goals in 14 games in the Spanish league — but Wednesday's 3-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain at Camp Nou gave a taster of what to expect from its expensively assembled, all-star attack.

Messi — with his record-extending 75th Champions League goal — was on the score sheet along with Neymar and Luis Suarez. The trio is six weeks into its new partnership and when the last 16 comes around it could be unstoppable.

"We know that together we can go places," Suarez said Wednesday after Barcelona sealed first place in its group for the eighth straight season.

Bayern's only defeat in a tough-looking Group E came at Manchester City after playing more than 70 minutes with 10 men and conceding twice in the last five minutes to lose 3-2. The German champions have few weaknesses in their team, with their attack looking even stronger with the addition of Robert Lewandowski, and have a coach in Pep Guardiola who has gone all the way before in the Champions League, with Barcelona in 2009 and '11.

Chelsea, meanwhile, has found a cure to its attacking frailties of last season with the signing of Spain striker Diego Costa and was the top-scoring team in the group stage, with 17 goals in six games. Traditionally strong in defense, Eden Hazard is developing into one of the world's best wingers and Cesc Fabregas has brought more creativity into the team's midfield.

"Last season, for sure we were not one of the top four and we played in the Champions League semifinals," Mourinho said. "Let's see what we can do this season."

BBC Sport - Liverpool: Brendan Rodgers' selections mystify Mark Lawrenson

Liverpool are "rudderless" and "going backwards just as fast as they went forwards last season", according to former player Mark Lawrenson.

Lawrenson says he is baffled by some of the team selections and accuses manager Brendan Rodgers of changing his side "like he does his socks".

The BBC Sport pundit also says Daniel Sturridge will not prove to be the "saviour" of the Anfield club.

"To be frank, Liverpool are all over the place at the moment. They are rudderless, low on confidence and do not seem to have a definitive way of playing."

"Some of Liverpool's key players have lost form but what has happened this season shows how much they relied on Suarez and Sturridge - those lads were clearly more than just 50% of the goals, they were 50% of the whole team," he continued.

"That's the only conclusion you can draw from what has happened without them."

"Last year Liverpool built up such momentum that it felt like he could just send the players out and they would sort it." he said.

"Now you look at it and it seems like the same scenario in reverse - they are going backwards just as fast as they went forwards last season.

David Luiz hoping for PSG-Chelsea final

David Luiz. Remember him? Champions League winner, £50 million man, exquisite/crazy and frequently both at once defender? Funny hair? Right, well he plays in France now, and he has some hopes for the way the Champions League will pan out this season. Some very specific hopes.

I want PSG to win the Champions League. Chelsea are having a very good season with very good players. I hope to play against them in the final, it would be amazing!

I am having visions of David Luiz starting that ridiculous runup in a penalty shootout and help me my soul just died. But anyway, he has more to say, specifically about Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas.

They proved their class. These are key recruits – with them, the penny dropped and the puzzle is in place. Cesc with his rhythm, his aggressiveness and experience in the Champions League and Diego with his composure in front of goal and its effectiveness – they had an immediate impact.

Personally I don't want to play Paris Saint-Germain in the final, or really at any point. Why? Because I'd feel a little bit bad at celebrating David Luiz's tears. Thanks for the the compliments, though, geezer.

Ni ngumu kuona Chelsea vs PSG fainali. ila nahisi tunaweza kukutana nao kwenye round of 16 au round of 8!!

BBC News - Chelsea FC makes living wage commitment

Chelsea FC have become the first club from the Premier League to sign up to the living wage.

The commitment means that all staff employed by the football club will receive at least £9.15 an hour if working in London and £7.85 an hour outside the capital.
Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck said: "We believe the move to the living wage underlines our commitment to ensuring that all our employees receive a fair rate of pay for their hard work and dedication. Quite simply, it is the right thing to do."

Chelsea said it would ensure the living wage was also paid for staff working for external contractors, at its Cobham training ground and other club operations by July 2017.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said Chelsea were "setting the right example" with the move.

He added: "They realise their team is more than just the 11 men out on the pitch, and that by putting more pounds in the pockets of their staff they are signing up to a win-win scenario that rewards a hard day's work with a fair day's pay for everyone."

Natarajia kiama kuwashukia Hull City.

Hull City-Chelsea Preview

by The Associated Press 5h ago

Maybe Chelsea aren't champions-elect after all.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea (11-3-1) looked to be running away with the league just a couple of weeks ago, but have dropped points in two of their last three games to allow the chasing pack a chance to close the gap.

Last Saturday saw the league leaders slump to defeat against Newcastle to finally end their unbeaten run in league play after 14 games without a loss. However, the Blues bounced back with a 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League in midweek, joining Arsenal and Manchester City in the last 16.

"I'm happy City and Arsenal went through," Mourinho said after the game. "I work in England. I want the prestige of English football and I hope they do well. It's good for us that our direct opponents in the Premier League are involved in European competitions. Manchester United are not. They have the same advantage that Liverpool had last season in terms of the Premier League, a big advantage.

"I don't think any of the big teams is out of the Champions League now. Maybe Liverpool. But all the teams that want to win the competition, they're all in the competition. What can we do? I don't know. Last season, for sure, we were not one of the top four and we played Champions League semi-finals. Let's see what we can do this season, step by step."

Saturday sees Chelsea host Steve Bruce's struggling Hull City (2-7-6). The Tigers are without a win in eight and dipped into the relegation zone with last weekend's 0-0 home draw against West Bromwich Albion.

Gelling the existing squad with a host of high-profile summer signings has proved tough for Bruce, with a host of injury problems also not helping the City manager's attempts to add some creativity to a predictable front line.

"It's an area that we tried to improve," Bruce said. "We brought in Ramirez, he picked up a groin injury and then got suspended so we haven't really seen him yet. Robert Snodgrass injured his knee in the first game of the season. Hatem Ben Arfa - it hasn't worked just yet. Jelavic took sick at the end of last week and so was on the bench at the weekend.

"The people that we brought in to give us that extra dimension - it hasn't quite happened yet but we have to give it time. It has been a frustrating thing for me because I haven't been able to play what I think is my best team, but that is the way it is and you're going to get injuries and suspensions. The effort and the endeavour from the team has been evident and it's a case of finding that right blend."

The injury crisis at Hull does finally seem to be easing, with only Mohamed Diame and Snodgrass missing for the clash with Chelsea. The Blues have no reported first-team injuries, although Diego Costa continues to struggle with ongoing fitness issues.

Chelsea did the double over Hull last season, winning both games 2-0. The Blues have never lost in six Premier League meetings with the Tigers, out-scoring their opponents 10-2 in those games and keeping four clean sheets

Khe khe khe khe khe kheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee nicheke mie yaani majizi kama Chelsick ndio wa kwanza kutangaza huu uhuni ati wanalipa living wage, what a joke! Typical headlines stories ambazo hazina kichwa wala mguu.

Wonders shall never end!!??!???

Jesus Christ signs for Chelsea: The Independent reports that one in five children think that Jesus Christ is a Chelsea player. In a survey of 1,000 arch, sarcastic and cheeky scamps at Brent Cross Shopping Centre, 20 per cent went for option ‘a’ when asked if Jesus was: “a) A footballer for Chelsea b) Son of God c) TV presenter d) X Factor contestant or e) An astronaut.”

Ile dawa ambayo mlipewa kule Newcastle?

Vipi Sir Alex alikuwa anawafanya nini waamuzi?

Aliwatafutia waamuzi dawa?

Sir Ntuzu Chelsea, hakuna timu kama Chelsea duniani. Chelsea ni "mafia", mieleka ,ku-pack bus tactics, and rugby like football.

Wewe ukitaka kuona vipi kabumbu linasakatwa angalia New Castle wanavyoliza wazee wa mieleka.

Najua utasema rafa wanabeba, ila kama wewe na Mashabiki wenzako wa man u ndo mnaona hivyo wala haitupi shida maana tunajua inawauma sana....it's just a drop of water in ocean

Ila pole sana halafu jua hates makes us even stronger....unafurahia sisi kufungwa na Newcastle kwa sababu ndo mlikuwa mnataka, huku nyie mmefungwa kuliko hata sisi..
