Treasury permanent secretary Emmanuel Tutuba.
Treasury permanent secretary Emmanuel Tutuba and Japanese ambassador Shinichi Goto signed the accord, along with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) representative, Naofumi Yamamura.

After the signing, Tutuba said the project for upgrading Kigoma port will cost Y2.73bn (54.79bn/-), covering maintenance of berths, a passenger lounge and roads within the port.

The port was built from 1912 to 1927, serving as a vital facility for cargo and passengers for Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, and for delivery of goods to Kigoma and other regions.

The refurbishing will see the port improved, attract business and boost government revenues. It will promote business between Tanzania and other countries, he said.

The water infrastructures improvement project in Zanzibar will be implemented at a cost of Y10.86bn (218.382bn/-) to facilitate availability of reliable water services and reduce water leakages tied to old infrastructures like tanks, pipes and wells.

“With reliable water services we will be able to control waterborne diseases; thus reducing poverty amongst people,” he stated.
Construction of the Arusha—Holili road will cost Y24.31bn (488.667bn/-), including building the Kikafu Bridge and some ring roads in Moshi municipality.

Ambassador Goto expressed satisfaction with the signing of the three agreements, noting that they are going to stimulate economic growth and enhance regional cooperation.

JICA country representative Yamamura said that Japan has opened doors and is ready to support Tanzania’s development endavours. JICA is ready to receive proposals for other development projects that Tanzania wishes to see implemented through concessional loans, he stated.

In 15 years, Japan has provided Tanzania with loans amounting to Y61.9bn (1.25trn/-), with the funds directed to project implementation in energy, agriculture, road construction, water and education, along with sponsoring Tanzanians in different programmes, the JICA executive affirmed.
