Background Information
Soon after Independence of Tanganyika from British rule, the Government called on the protestant Churches in the Country to establish a referral and teaching hospital in the Northern zone of the country. Under the leadership of the Right Reverend Stefano R. Moshi, Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanganyika, Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF) was established as a corporate body and registered in Tanganyika in 1961, with Bishop Stefano Moshi as its first Chairman.
GSF planned for the construction of the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) and raised large funds from overseas partners to build and equip the hospital.
Therefore, the idea to build Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) was born 1961, with capital funds assured from Luther Hjalpen of Sweden , Central Agency and Bread for the World of Germany, coupled with an anonymous Christian donation of USD $209,000.00 from Texas, USA. Site work began in April 1965. The cornerstone for the hospital was laid by the first President of Tanzania, Julius K. Nyerere, on 8th June 1965.
The project was an integral and essential part of the Tanzania Government's 5-Year Medical Plan. The Government agreed to contribute annually towards its basic operating costs. In the overall plan of 1965 there was provision for development, at a later stage of full Medical School.
Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre is one among the four Zonal Consultant hospitals in Tanzania. It was formally established in 1971 as a Zonal Referral Consultant hospital owned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) under the Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF). The aim was to create an independent legal body which nevertheless is to be permanently linked to the ELCT and Christian Council of Tanganyika. The immediate purpose of the foundation was to be a body capable of establishing the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. The referral hospital was established in order to serve the northern, eastern and central zone of Tanzania. Its record in Medical Services, Research, and Education has significant influence in East Africa and beyond.
In 2011, KCMC continued to carry out its services to people according to the mission statement, “To render God’s healing services to set mankind free from the bondage of sickness, suffering and sin”, “To reflect Christ’s character of love, mercy, compassion and faithfulness in the course of fulfilling the call to care and heal the sick” and “To share God’s grace and love through the power of the Holy Spirit in the course of treating and caring for the sick”. Since 1971 the Hospital has continued to grow, serving the northern, eastern and central zones of Tanzania as a world-class centre for patient care, teaching and research with leading clinical specialty areas and an internationally renowned research institute. KCMC has ability to create a culture of excellence and care and therefore this has made KCMC as an institution where patients want to come for care and staff and trainees want to work. We remain inspired by the dedication of our founders and we are committed to their vision of providing excellent care, now and in the future.

About Bugando Medical Centre
The Catholic Church built the Hospital between 1968 - 1977 and it was offically opened by His Excellency the late President Julius Kambarage Nyerere on 3rd November 1971. In 1972 the Hospital was nationlized by the Government. However, in October 1985 the Government handed back the Hospital to the Tanzania Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Tanzania who is the owner with an agreement that the hospital be run in partnership with the government to provide Government Services as a referral and consultant hospital for the Lake Zone.
Bugando Medical Centre is a referral, consultant and university teaching hospital for the Lake and Western zones of the United Republic of Tanzania. It is situated along the shores of Lake Victoria in Mwanza City. It has over 950 beds and over 1300 employees.
It is a referral tertiary specialist care for eight regions and serves a catchment’s population of over 14 million people.
It is an exciting time to join our team as we will be opening a new radiotherapy centre located in the state- of- art oncology wing building at the hospital with Co-60 machine and conventional simulator to make it a regional hub for cancer treatment. It is the second established centre in the country.
Mwanza is Tanzania’s second-largest city, and the lake region’s economic heart. Mwanza is set on Lake Victoria’s shore, surrounded by hills. In addition to being a stop on the way to Rubondo Island National Park, Mwanza is a great starting or finishing point for safaris through Ngorongoro, Serengeti national parks and Mount Kilimanjaro.

OCEAN ROAD CANCER INSTITUTE
The Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) is located along the Indian Ocean about 200 meters from the beach. This health facility is one of the oldest health institutions in Tanzania having been founded in 1895 by the German colonial government. At its inception the hospital catered for German community only. In 1920. After the world war I, the British colonial government followed the footsteps of their predecessors and continued to provide medical services and facilities for European communities in this hospital, while Africans had to fend for themselves.
The hospital was inaugurated in October 1895, people were impressed both by its functional usefulness and aesthetic attraction. The history of the German Government Hospital reflects the political context of the time as well as the progress of medicine in combatting endemic diseases.
While patients were often segregated by race the Ocean Road hospital was almost exclusively reserved for Europeans, they were all benefitting from the results of medical science taking place in the hospital. For Robert Koch the hospital (and its laboratory) served as basis for his research in the field of malaria, tuberculosis, black water fever, sleeping sickness, and relapsing fever. It was from Africa that he embarked on his journey to Stockholm to receive the Nobel Prize in December 1905 for his investigations and discoveries in relation to tuberculosis (TB).
During the First World War Ocean Road Hospital, was taken over by the British and it was catering for the Europeans.
After independence in 1961, the Tanzanians took over the hospital and it was catering for all Tanzanians despite of the race.
After Independence all racial barriers from the colonial past were removed and the Hospital catered for all races. In the sixties and seventies, the Ocean Road Hospital operated as a maternity wing of the Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC). In 1980, a decision was made by the Ministry of Health to make the Ocean Road Hospital the hub for radiotherapy services for the Muhimbili medical centre. The government in 1996 through Act number 2 of the parliament, established an autonomous National Cancer Institute called Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI).

Even in determining whether a country is ldc or not, IMF na WB huzingatia idadi ya watu kwenye nchi husika. You can't calculate the GNI per capita of a country without factoring in its population. GNI per capita is what is used in ranking countries as an LDC or not and there's no way you can calculate it without using population, so wacha kupotosha. Unless you want to tell us that IMF erred in striking your country off the list of LDC countries based on your country's GNI per capita figures.
