Across the world, many people believe teachers are the least paid civil servants. However, this is not always the case.
Some countries reward their teachers by paying them good money. Tanzania could be one of the countries in Africa that pay their teachers well.
According to reports from the Swahili-speaking nation, the least paid teacher takes home more than Sh30, 000 every month.
Clouds TV on Monday hosted Tanzania's Teachers Association's Secretary, Deus Seif, who confirmed that Tanzanian teachers are paid well.
According to him, the least paid Tanzanian teacher takes home Tsh700,000 every month, which is equivalent to Ksh33,600 when converted as per the current exchange rate.
He noted that teacher's salary depends on job groups, with the low ranking job group earning over Ksh33,000.
However, the teachers are then supposed to remit some amount to the union.
"Kima cha chini cha mshahara wa Mwalimu Inategemea ni kuanzia 700,000 kwa hiyo anakatwa 2% ya mshahara wake kwa ajili ya kuchangia chama. Kwa mwezi chama kinapata Bil. 2 au 3 na hizo hela zikishaingia asilimia 15 ya hiyo fedha inakwenda shuleni," he said which loosely translates to
(The salary for a teacher is based on job groups, the minimum amount starting at 700,000, 2% of the salary is deducted and submitted to the teachers' union. In a month the union receives Tsh2 or 3 billion and with that amount, 15% of that money goes to school)
In Kenya, the least paid teacher according to the recently restructured job groups takes home between Ksh25,692 (minimum) and Ksh30,304 (maximum).
