Dar es Salaam. The national debt increased by $3.9 billion in one year as the government is implementing infrastructure projects and improve provision of social services.

According to the Bank of Tanzania’s (BoT) monthly economic review, the debt stood at $33. 7 bill at the end of July this year, having increased by $3.9 billion from July 2020.

External debt, comprising the public and private sector, amounted to $25.96 billion at the end of July 2021 and accounted for 77 percent of the national debt.

The debt stock represented an increase of $436.8 million from the preceding month and $2.76 billion from July 2020.

“The profile of external debt by borrower category remained broadly unchanged, with debt owed by the central government accounting for 77.7 percent,” BoT stated.

According to the central bank of Tanzania, transport and telecommunication activities accounted for more than a quarter of outstanding external debt, associated with ongoing mega infrastructure projects, followed by social welfare and education, as well as energy and mining.

On the other hand, the government domestic debt amounted to Sh17.8 trillion at the end of July 2021, a decrease of Sh1.12 trillion from June 2021 and an increase of Sh2.7 trillion from the corresponding period in 2020.

Longer-term instruments, which are Treasury bonds and stocks, sustained dominance in the composition of domestic debt, accounting for 84.7 percent of the stock.

External debt service payments amounted to $25.2 million, of which $21 million was principal, the central bank said.

South Africa's High Commissioner to Kenya, Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, toured investments by leading South African companies at Tatu City on Tuesday. His stops included Crawford International school, a 20-acre, multi-billion-shilling investment by ADvTECH, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed education group; Kenya Wine Agencies Ltd (KWAL), which is majority owned by South African beverage conglomerate Distell; and Cold Solutions, an investment by ARCH Emerging Markets Partners, which is backed by South African businessman Patrice Motsepe.
"I am delighted to witness these transformational investments South African businesses are making in Kenya," High Commissioner Mahlangu said at a ceremony to mark the naming of Crawford Road, which leads to Crawford International School in Tatu City. "The South African and Kenyan governments are committed to strong bilateral trade and investment, and our private sector businesses are natural partners to grow capital flows and knowledge exchange."
Jenny Coetzee, Managing Director, Crawford International, said that ADvTECH's first Crawford International school had experienced a surge in enrolment in Kenya since opening in 2019 in Tatu City.
High Commissioner Mahlangu visited the site of Cold Solutions, a 15,000 sqm flagship facility, which will improve food and pharmaceutical security and promote economic development in Kenya and the region. ARCH's Cold Chain Solutions East Africa Fund, which is undertaking the investment, is jointly owned by Africa Rainbow Capital, which is backed by South African entrepreneur Motsepe.
"Cold Solutions' first facility in Kenya is on track to open next year and experiencing strong demand from tenants ranging from food to pharmaceutical companies," said Jared Irving, Managing Director.
The high commissioner concluded his visit at KWAL, which broke ground on a USD 40 million production and distribution facility at Tatu City on 12 February 2021. In addition to Distell, the Kenyan Government is a significant shareholder through the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation.

Super Plastics plans to open a new manufacturing facility at the Tatu Industrial Park’s light industrial and logistics zone.

The firm will specialise in manufacturing light density polyethene plastic products for cosmetics and pharmaceutical companies in Kenya and East Africa.

“We chose Tatu City because we want to settle into a modern industrial park and take advantage of the ready infrastructure.

“Tatu City’s fully-serviced plots already have ready roads, water, power, wastewater and ICT.

“Tatu City Special Economic Zone gives us incentives to increase our investment, expand our business and create more jobs. We also look forward to the opportunity to tap into the business-to-business synergies at Tatu Industrial Park,” said managing director Stephen Gathiaka.

Early this month, Tatu City appointed Australia-based construction company SMEC as the lead infrastructure consultant for the second phase of its Tatu Industrial Park development in Ruiru.

SMEC will oversee tendering and building of roads, drainage, street lighting, water distribution pipeline and wastewater system, electrical networks and IT systems at the 2,500-acre site, with the work expected to be completed in May 2022.
