Increasesd demand for air travel on the Western region has seen aviation firms increase their flights from Nairobi to Kisumu in a move set to heighten competition for air ticket on the route.

In a span of less than two months, a number of airlines have increased flight frequencies or launched operations to Kisumu International Airport, raising competition for air ticket with carriers such as Kenya Airways, Fly540 and Safarilink.

Aviation firm 748 Air Services last month started direct passenger flights to Kisumu from Nairobi stepping up competition for passengers on the route.

The company, that is currently on an aggressive expansion plan, says the new flight will be originating from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi two times per day.

Passenger on the route pays an average fare of Sh10,700 on a return air ticket – which is relatively lower compared to its competitors on the route.

In March, budget carrier Jambojet increased flights in nearly all its routes including Kisumu following high demand for passengers seeking air travel ahead of Easter holiday in April.

The airline increased frequencies on specific days from March 8 but kept the airfare unchanged.

The airline flies from Eldoret to Kisumu before proceeding to Mombasa.

“Say yes to unforgettable Easter this year. We have increased frequencies during the Easter season visit into your schedule,” said the airline in notice then.

Safarilink, that introduced an additional mid-morning flight to cash in on increased demand during the Madaraka Day fete is also set to increase frequency on its Nairobi-Kisumu route in the next two weeks.

The local airline will now fly three times per day from Nairobi to Kisumu, an increase from two due to increased demand from travellers.

“We have experienced immense growth along the Kisumu-Nairobi route due to our very affordable fares. We now have plans for an additional mid-morning flight on the route starting mid -June,” said the airline in an interview with Shipping and Logistics yesterday.

According to the Kenya Airports Authority reports, Kisumu International Airport handles about 500,000 passengers per year.

The airport is, however, undergoing an upgrade at Sh1.2 billion to improve customer experience and reposition it as a regional aviation hub.

The move will see the airport double the number of passengers it can handle to 1 million per year.

Kisumu

Most passengers using the Nairobi-Kisumu route are either on business trip, for conference, tourism or on visit to their rural homes.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority director-general Gilbert Kibe says the increase in passenger operations on Kisumu route is mainly pegged on rapid expansion of the lake town city.

"The middle class is growing, the county strategy is working, business and trade requires movement both ways. Kisumu is developing rapidly," says Mr Kibe.

"Air transport is the single largest enabler of economic development in Kenya and globally. More counties will begin air transport."

Kenya Airport Authority Wilson Airport and Northern region Airports manager Joseph Okumu said demand for air travel on the Kisumu route is set to fall as more players jostle for a slice on the route.

The route he says is also lucrative as it connects passengers working in the city but would want to retreat to the villages over the weekend.

"We expect to see more airlines launching operations on Kisumu route. This is good news as more passenger travels will open up the city and Western region," said Mr Okumu.

KCB’s increased investment in Banque Populaire du Rwanda Plc (BPR) signals the increasing attraction of the landlocked country’s banking industry to Kenyan lenders.

Other African banks such as Nigerian banking giant, Access Bank Plc, have also shown huge interest in the country of more than 13 million people, by acquiring an additional 16.22 percent shareholding in its Rwandan subsidiary valued at $9.55 million thereby growing its stake in the Rwandan unit to 91.22 percent from 75 percent.

Data by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) shows that Rwanda continues to dominate the East African region as the most profitable banking market for Kenyan lenders for the third year in a row, signalling increased investment into one of Africa’s fastest growing economies.

CBK’s Bank Supervision annual report (2020) shows that Kenyan bank subsidiaries operating in Rwanda made the most profit before tax of Ksh3.55 billion ($33.17 million) in 2020, with Tanzania being the least profitable banking market that generated a paltry Ksh641.13 million ($5.99 million) of gross earnings.

Rwanda is followed by Uganda which made a profit of Ksh3.53 billion ($32.99 million), Democratic Republic of Congo that realised Ksh1.87 billion ($17.47 million) profit, South Sudan (Ksh1.33 billion, $12.42 million), Mauritius (Ksh1.19 billion, $11.12 million) and Burundi (Ksh661.44 million, $6.18 million).

Last year, Kenyan banks operating in the region saw a combined profit of Ksh12.79 billion ($119.53 million), representing 0.51 percent growth from Ksh12.72 billion ($118.8 million) in 2019.

“The impact of Covid-19 that continues to disrupt growth in global markets has impaired profitability of the Kenyan banks across borders,” the report says.

Kenyan banks operating in Rwanda are Equity, KCB, NCBA and I&M.

KCB is also in the process of acquiring Banque Populaire du Rwanda Plc from British financial services conglomerate Atlas Mara (62 percent) and other minority shareholders (38 percent).

According to the report Rwanda contributed the highest earnings capacity translating to 27.75 percent of the total profits while subsidiaries operating in Tanzania were the least profitable and contributed five percent of the total profits of combined subsidiaries in all host countries.

“The performance in Tanzania was affected by losses reported by some subsidiaries attributed to provisions for loan losses,” according to the report.

Gross loan book

In 2018 and 2019 Rwandan banking market also offered the highest earnings capacity for Kenyan lenders despite having fewer regional banking subsidiaries compared to Uganda and Tanzania

The performance of Tanzania subsidiaries was attributed to low business due to increased competition in a market dominated by established local players.

Last year, the combined gross loans for Kenyan subsidiaries in the host countries increased by 25.2 percent to Ksh421.1 billion ($3.93 billion) from Ksh336.4 billion ($3.14 billion) in 2019.

The Kenyan banks operating in Tanzania recorded the highest level of gross loans at $981.3 million accounting for 25 percent of gross loans in all the subsidiaries outside Kenya.

This was followed by subsidiaries in DRC which accounted for 23 percent of the gross loans while Uganda and Rwanda accounted for 18 percent and 17 percent of the gross loans respectively.

Mauritius recorded gross loans of $579.43 million accounting for 15 percent of gross loans.

Kenyan subsidiaries accounted for a combined deposit base of Ksh746 billion ($6.97 billion) in 2020 compared with Ksh514.4 billion ($4.8 billion) in 2019, with the main contributor of deposits being Equity Group’s subsidiary in DRC, Banque Commerciale Du Congo with total deposits of Ksh243 billion ($2.27 billion) representing 33 percent of total deposits of subsidiaries in host countries.

Mauritian bank AfrAsia has published the third edition of the Africa Wealth Report, ranking the richest people and their assets on the continent. The report looks at 17 African countries.
  • Africa’s ‘Big 5’ wealth markets are South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, and Kenya.
  • Mauritians are the wealthiest individuals in Africa, followed by South Africans, based on wealth per capita.
Screen-Shot-2019-09-13-at-12.42.39.png

A country’s wealth refers to the “net assets held by all individuals living in a country, including all their assets (real estate, cash, shares, commercial interests) minus liabilities,” the report states. This equation gives more populated countries a significant advantage.
  • The total wealth held in Africa “has increased by only 14% over the last ten years (2008-2018),” according to the report.
  • Due to a lack of sufficiently reliable sources, data for Algeria, the DRC and Zimbabwe were not included in the report.
Despite Africa containing 16% of the world’s population, it has only accumulated 1% of the world’s wealth of $204trn.
  • Africa’s wealth totalled $2.2 trn.
  • At least 42% of Africa’s wealth ($920m) is held by high net worth individuals.
  • 23 billionaires live on the African continent.
  • On average, the net wealth per African is $1,900, compared to $27,000 worldwide.
WEALTH PER CAPITA TANZANIA BADO SANA, NCHI NI YA WAARABU NA WAHINDI. 😂 😂 😂 😂
